2012 NBA Free Agents: Steve Nash and Best Unrestricted Point Guards Available

Tim KeeneyJun 7, 2018

Point guard is the only position the NBA—along with possibly center—that, if you have a superstar there, you will automatically be good no matter who else is on your team.

Fortunately for certain teams, there are going to be some very good available point guards in free agency. And if you want to count guys who have player options (ahem, Deron Williams), then the class is even more stacked.

For the sake of this article, though, we are just going to take a look at unrestricted point guard free agents. Here we go!

Steve Nash, Phoenix Suns

Nash, 38, is getting up there in age, but he continues to prove everyone wrong as he puts up statistically stellar seasons year after year.

He's not the guy who will score 18 points per game anymore, but he plays a type of game that doesn't require much explosiveness. Instead, he's more deceptive.

You know what you're getting with Nash. He'll take care of the ball and make everyone around him better (10.7 assists per game in 2011-12) while knocking down the open jumpers. Despite his age, he's still good for 30 minutes per game.

He's like a rich man's Mike Bibby.

Really rich.

Goran Dragic, Houston Rockets

Dragic is no longer the NBA's best-kept secret. Every time he got a chance at minutes, he would produce. Yet no one really took the 26-year-old seriously because he didn't produce consistently.

Then Kyle Lowry got injured.

Dragic got the chance to step in and start for Houston for 28 games. During those games, he averaged 18.0 points, 8.4 assists, 1.8 steals, and 1.8 three-pointers on 49 percent shooting.

At just 26 years old, he'll get more money than Nash if teams are willing to buy his amazing late-season performance.

And if Dragic repeats those numbers, he'll easily be worth it.

Jason Terry, Dallas Mavericks

Terry certainly isn't a true point guard in every sense of the world, but he can handle the ball and he score in a hurry.

The 12-year veteran continues to shoot the ball extremely well off the bench, and serves as the perfect sixth man for any team not named the Thunder.

He's an energy guy and will be a valuable signing for a team in contention. Don't be surprised if Terry wins another NBA championship in his career.
