Andy Pettitte: New York Yankees Great Testifies Against Roger Clemens

Adam WellsMay 2, 2012

The never-ending Roger Clemens saga keeps rolling along, as his former New York Yankees and Houston Astros teammate, Andy Pettitte, took the stand on Tuesday at Clemens' perjury trial.

Here is a portion of Pettitte's testimony (via The New York Times):

"

"Roger had mentioned to me that he had taken H.G.H. and that it could help with recovery. You know, that’s all I really remember about the conversation."

And, without flinching, he said that Clemens accused him in 2005 of remembering that conversation inaccurately. Clemens said it was his wife, not him, who had used H.G.H.

"Obviously, I was a little flustered because I thought that he had told me he did," Pettitte said. "My reaction after that was, well, no good asking him or talking to him about this now, and I just walked out, end of the conversation."

That would seem to be damning testimony, but then Pettitte took the stand on Wednesday morning for cross-examination and things started to fall apart, according to ESPN reporter T.J. Quinn.

"

Pettitte just said he's only 50% sure he understood #Clemens correctly when he said he used HGH. This is exactly what the defense wanted.

The New York Times story said that Pettitte's testimony on Tuesday could end up being the key to this case, depending on how credible and reliable jurors believe McNamee to be. Needless to say, Clemens' camp did its job today by getting Pettitte to make his statement on Wednesday.

Pettitte and Clemens used to be very close. In fact, it was Clemens who convinced Pettitte to sign with the Houston Astros prior to the 2005 season so they could play together.

Clemens has been battling to keep his name clear and avoid jail time after his former trainer, Brian McNamee, implicated Clemens and Pettitte in a performance-enhancing drug scandal.

Pettitte's inconsistencies on the witness stand could be the big break that Clemens needed. We will see how things play out as the trial continues and keep you updated with all of the information as it becomes available.
