Troy Williams: Why Star Recruit Will Pick Kentucky over North Carolina

Tim KeeneyJun 7, 2018

2013 basketball recruit Troy Williams is close to making a decision between North Carolina and Kentucky.

When Williams, who is ranked No. 6 in the class of 2013 by ESPN, finally chooses a college, it will be the Wildcats, who will celebrate the addition of a new small forward.

Williams, who recently moved his decision back from Tuesday, will likely announce his future school later this week, but according to Adam Zagoria, it also might not be until later this month or even July.

He is, after all, still a junior in high school. He has time.

Nonetheless, the talented small forward with a high motor and a knack for getting to the basket is down to two schools. That much we know.

Here's a closer look at the two favorites.

Kentucky Wildcats

Last week, Williams told the Louisville Courier-Journal that the decision "will come down to which coach I like the best."

Now, John Calipari and Roy Williams are both great coaches, but Calipari just seems to have a way with these young kids.

Whether you think he's slimy or not, there's no denying Cal's ability to reel in top recruits year after year in Lexington.

Troy Williams may have a name that's eerily similar to North Carolina's head coach, but if he is making a decision strictly on the coach, I wouldn't be surprised to see Kentucky come out on top.

What's more, Kentucky has a reputation for being the "one-and-done" school. If that's what Williams wants, there's no question he'll choose to be a Wildcat.

North Carolina Tar Heels

When I say Williams is going to pick Calipari because he's the best coach, it's really just splitting hairs. Roy Williams is also one of the top coaches in the country.

However, Calipari is more known for putting his players quickly through to the NBA, so that's why Roy will take a backseat.

If it comes down to something other than a path to the NBA, the Heels have a good shot. They are obviously one of the best programs in the nation, they run a fast-paced offense that most kids love to play in, and they have a solid 2013 class (Isaiah Hicks and Nate Britt) most players would want to be a part of.

Nonetheless, I'm putting my eggs in Kentucky's basket for this one.
