2012 NFL Mock Draft: 2nd-Round Steals with Rookie of the Year Potential

Wes ODonnellJun 2, 2018

Only 32 players can be selected in the first round of the NFL draft and that means a ton of talented guys drop to Day 2.

The 2012 draft has a plethora of first-round talent still on the board and more than one team is going to get a steal.

More than a few of these players are day-one starters with Rookie of the Year potential.

Here's a projected look at the biggest steals in the second round of the 2012 NFL draft.

33. St. Louis Rams: Jonathan Martin, OT, Stanford

The Rams begin their assault on Round 2 with a guy who has top-10 skills, but tumbled down the board. They'll need to get Martin stronger, but he's a phenomenal value for this team.

34. Indianapolis Colts: Coby Fleener, TE, Stanford

Fleener to the Colts is without question the easiest pick of the second round.

35. Baltimore Ravens (via Min): Courtney Upshaw, DE/OLB, Alabama

This pick runs a close second to Fleener-Colts. The Ravens know exactly what they're getting in Upshaw and he has an incredibly high floor.

Baltimore would be foolish to pass him up this late in the draft.

36. Denver Broncos (via TB): Reuben Randle, WR, LSU

The Broncos' move out of the first round wasn't entirely surprising, but they need to go ahead and start making some picks. Randle is a ready-to-contribute receiver and could put up solid numbers if Peyton has time to throw.

37. Cleveland Browns: Cordy Glenn, OL, Georgia

The Browns added a running back and quarterback in the first and must now protect them. Glenn can play tackle or guard at the next level and that type of versatility gives the Browns options.

38. Jacksonville Jaguars: Janoris Jenkins, CB, North Alabama

Forgetting about character concerns here, the Jags jump at the chance to add a playmaker like Jenkins.

39. St. Louis Rams (via Wash): Stephen Hill, WR, Georgia Tech

It will take some time for Stephen Hill to develop, but he has elite potential and Bradford can use him to the stretch the field in his first year. Jeff Fisher and the Rams continue to pick up value left and right.

40. Carolina Panthers: Vinny Curry, DE, Marshall

Luke Kuechly was a great pick for this team in the first round, but he won't help them get after the passer. Vinny Curry, on the other hand, has a knack for doing just that.

41. Buffalo Bills: Alshon Jeffery, WR, South Carolina

Call this what you will, but the Bills add a truly talented receiver with big potential here and hope he can star opposite Stevie Johnson immediately. The Gamecocks have done the Bills well early in this draft.

42. Miami Dolphins: Andre Branch, DE, Clemson

Miami landed their future signal-caller in the first, but now they need to find a way to hit the opposing team's QB. Branch fills that need and offers good value here.

43. Seattle Seahawks: Mychal Kendricks, LB, California

What Pete Carroll was doing reaching for Bruce Irvin at No. 15 is anyone's guess, but Kendricks is a guy who can come in and start for this team sooner rather than later.

44. Kansas City ChiefsAmini Silatolu, OG, Midwestern State

Some will question Pioli's decision to take Dontari Poe at No. 11, but he apparently sees Vince Wilfork-like talent. Here in the second he gets the opportunity to land a guard who can come in and help Jamaal Charles immediately.

45. St. Louis Rams (via Dal): Lavonte David, OLB, Nebraska

The Rams could reach for a wide receiver here, but David offers great value at a position of need. It wouldn't be surprising at all to see him put up big numbers.

46. Philadelphia Eagles (via Arz): Kendall Reyes, DT, UConn

Philadelphia traded up for a defensive tackle in Round 1, but if they've learned anything from their rival Giants it's that you can never have enough talented defensive linemen.

47. New York Jets: Lamar Miller, RB, Miami

The best threat thus far for Rookie of the Year consideration, Miller would be a great compliment to Shonn Greene in the Jets backfield and can make plays in the passing game.

He has the potential to be a legitimate starting running back in this league and his speed will be a huge asset to them.

They still need an O-lineman, though.

48. New England Patriots (via Oak): Devon Still, DT, Penn State

The Patriots and Bill Belichick know they have huge needs in the front seven and Still offers tremendous value here.

49. San Diego Chargers: Bobby Massie, OT, Ole Miss

If Melvin Ingram weren't on the board, the Chargers would have jumped on Riley Reiff in the first round last night. Now they land an SEC tackle who can challenge for a starting spot immediately.

50. Chicago Bears: Peter Konz, C, Wisconsin

Konz's impact won't be felt in box scores, but he gives this team the opportunity to get better immediately by shuffling people around to their best positions.

51. Philadelphia Eagles: Bobby Wagner, OLB, Utah State

The Eagles linebackers were bloody awful a season ago and Wagner is a guy who has been targeted as a great fit for them.

52. Tennessee Titans: Ronnell Lewis, OLB, Oklahoma

Lewis will jump in for Tennessee and could start from day one. A big, strong, physical hitter who loves flying downhill, the former Sooner is a sleeper pick for defensive ROY honors.

He'll get the opportunity to make plays immediately.

53. Cincinnati Bengals: Brian Quick, WR, Appalachian State

Quick's size and skill makes the Bengals a potentially dangerous offensive threat this season if he learns quickly. Tasking defenses with covering two 6'4" guys would be a nightmare.

54. Detroit Lions: Josh Robinson, CB, UCF

Speed kills and we know Josh Robinson has plenty of that.

55. Atlanta Falcons: Mitchell Schwartz, OT, California

Atlanta's first pick of the draft isn't wasted here. They need help keeping people out of the backfield as well as creating running lanes.

56. Pittsburgh Steelers: LaMichael James, RB, Oregon

Why not take a chance on LaMichael James here? We know Rashard Mendenhall has durability issues and James offers a great compliment to the bigger back if he's healthy.

James' speed and playmaking skills make him a natural dark horse for ROY honors if he earns enough touches.

57. Denver Broncos: Brandon Thompson, DT, Clemson

The Broncos have to address their need at defensive tackle eventually.

58. Houston Texans: Mohamed Sanu, WR, Rutgers

This is actually a brilliant pick for the Texans. After scooping up another pass-rusher in the first, they land a receiver with intriguing potential and versatility.

Sanu has some learning still to do, but he's a playmaker with the football in his hands and could learn loads from Andre Johnson.

Rookie receivers don't always contribute, but don't be surprised if Sanu does.

59. New Orleans Saints - No Pick (Bounty Hunting)

59. Green Bay Packers: Trumaine Johnson, CB, Montana

Johnson's size and physicality give the Packers much-needed youth in the secondary.

60. Baltimore Ravens: Derek Wolfe, DL, Cincinnati

There is simply too much value here for the Ravens to pass on defensive line help that so willingly falls into their lap.

61. San Francisco 49ers: Dwayne Allen, TE, Clemson

The Niners would love to give Alex Smith another weapon over the middle now that they have field-stretchers in Randy Moss and Mario Manningham on the outside.

62. New England Patriots: Mike Adams, OT, Ohio State

Bill Belichick simply sees too much value here and cannot pass on it. Wouldn't be surprised if another team jumps in for Adams here.

63. New York Giants: Zebrie Sanders, OL, Florida State

Reviews are mixed on Sanders, but if he plays up to his potential, he could be a starting tackle for Big Blue. Unfortunately, they have a similar player in Will Beatty already, but they don't know if they can trust him. Sanders at least gives them another option.
