NFL Draft Projections: Landing Spots for Top Wide Receiver Prospects

Timothy RappJun 7, 2018

Be honest. Other than the very beginning or when your favorite team is picking, you normally pay the most attention to where the skill position players go in the draft.

You want to see what team will take a chance on a quarterback later in the draft, or where that sleeper running back might go.

And of course, you're always watching to see where the draft's best pass catchers end up. Everybody gets excited by a high-flying, acrobatic wide receiver, after all.

With that in mind, let's take a look at where this year's elite wide receivers might end up. Obviously, this is totally a shot in the dark—with the first round promising to be chock full of trades and surprises—but what's life without some draft projections?

6. St. Louis Rams: Justin Blackmon, Oklahoma State

While a team like the Jacksonville Jaguars could make a move to trade up and land Blackmon, I believe the most likely destination remains the Rams.

I don't think the Minnesota Vikings, Cleveland Browns or Tampa Bay Buccaneers are going to select Blackmon, and the Rams really need to add a few weapons at wide receiver for Sam Bradford.

This should be the pick.

13. Arizona Cardinals: Michael Floyd, Notre Dame

I've had Floyd going as high as No. 7 to the Jaguars, and I've had him dropping as low as No. 16 to the Jets. Where he lands truly is a mystery, but I'm inclined to believe that if he drops to No. 13, the Cardinals won't hesitate to scoop him up.

Imagine the combination of Floyd and Larry Fitzgerald. That's scary. Well, unless you're a Cardinals fan, in which case it probably makes you giggle like a schoolgirl with a crush.

Floyd is a great value at this pick, and adding a wide receiver opposite Fitzgerald should be a priority for the Cardinals at the draft. Making a splash with Floyd is just a bonus.

21. Cincinnati Bengals: Kendall Wright, Baylor

I'm torn on when the next two receivers will come off the board. On one hand, I think Wright is the safer option than the next guy I have being drafted, and he's a dynamic playmaker that will be a lot of fun to watch.

But he may also be most effective as a slot receiver, and I think the Bengals may be inclined to add a player more comfortable out wide.

Still, I think Wright and A.J. Green would be a dynamic pair, and I think the Bengals go the safer route here. Which leads us to the next pick in this draft...

22. Cleveland Browns: Stephen Hill, Georgia Tech

There's no question the Browns need to add playmakers on offense, and with two first-round picks this year, they're in a great position to do so.

I think they'd probably prefer Wright here to pair with Greg Little, but Stephen Hill could ultimately be one of the best players to come out of this draft, period.

His combination of size and speed has people comparing him to a poor man's Randy Moss, though he has a long way to go before he justifies that talk.

Hill will be a field-stretcher from day one, but whether or not he can become a well-rounded receiver capable of learning a full route tree or simply a go-route specialist remains to be seen.

I think he's going to be a good one. Alongside another player I think will end up a Brown before the end of the night—Trent Richardson—Hill will help change the face of Cleveland's offense.

30. San Francisco 49ers: Rueben Randle, LSU

Randy Moss is old and volatile, Mario Manningham is a nice player but best served as a team's third option, Michael Crabtree has yet to live up to expectations and Ted Ginn Jr. is good at returning punts.

What I'm saying is that the 49ers should probably add a young receiver to aid in their Super Bowl run.

Randle is a prototypical pro receiver, combining solid size (6'3", 210 pounds), speed (4.42 40-yard dash at his pro day) and the ability to adjust to the ball in the air.

He may not have the rookie impact of some of the other first-round wide receivers, but he should be just what the doctor ordered in San Francisco moving forward.
