2013 NFL Mock Draft: QBs Who Will Define Next Year's Class

Richard LangfordApr 24, 2012

The 2013 NFL draft is going to be loaded with QB talent. And like most drafts, the success or failures of those QBs will define that draft.

In my full first-round mock below, I have four QBs pegged to go in the first round, and those picks will be given extra attention.

The focus here was not on identifying the draft order. That is worthy of its own expedition. So try not to get hung up on the draft order. Nailing the draft order was not the point here.

Langford's 2013 First Round Mock

1. Cleveland Browns: Matt Barkley, QB, USC

Matt Barkley is doing his best Andrew Luck impression. He returned to school for his senior year despite the promise of millions awaiting him in the upcoming draft.

He is the clear-cut favorite to be the No. 1 overall selection. At 6'2" Barkley lacks ideal height, but he has all the other tools.

Barkley has made big gains in each of his three seasons as a starter. This will overwhelm NFL scouts. He has gone from being a mistake-prone freshman, to a superb decision-maker and accurate passer.

Last year, Barkley completed a sparkling 69 percent of his passes for 3,528 yards with 39 touchdowns and seven picks.

2. Indianapolis Colts: Sam Montgomery, DE/OLB, LSU

Besides Peyton Manning the strength of the Colts was their fierce pass-rushing DEs. They will rekindle that with the elite pass-rushing skills Montgomery.

3. Jacksonville Jaguars: Marquess Wilson, WR, Washington State

The Jaguars must add offensive weapons. The 6'3" Wilson is just that. He has the speed, hands and size to be a force.

4. Minnesota Vikings: David Amerson, CB, North Carolina State

The Vikings secondary is so thin, that even if they make it a priority in this draft, they will still need help. Amerson is an elite corner prospect. He is 6'3", but still has the speed and quickness to hang with burners.

5. Miami DolphinsTyler Bray, QB, Tennessee

If the Dolphins don't take Ryan Tannehill in 2012, they are going to need a QB. Bray is a big, physically gifted QB that scouts will be drooling over.

Bray was inconsistent last season, but that can be attributed to a thumb injury he sustained midway through the year.

He still ended up completing 59 percent of his passes for 1,983 yards, 17 touchdowns and just six interceptions.

He has a cannon for an arm, and improving accuracy. At 6'6" and 220 pounds, he also has ideal size. If he lights it up at Tennessee this year, he could actually surpass Barkley at No. 1.

6. Arizona CardinalsJake Matthews, OT, Texas A&M

Matthews, son of former NFLer Bruce Matthews, has been playing right tackle. He has the talent and body to be a great left tackle. He is strong in both run blocking and pass protection.

7. St. Louis Rams: D.J. Fluker, OT, Alabama

The Rams could use the nasty streak and punishing blocking that Fluker will bring.

8. Oakland Raiders: Xavier Rhodes, CB, Florida State

The Raiders will really be patching it together at corner this year. They will address that by adding the tall, yet fast Rhodes.

9. St. Louis Rams (from Washington Redskins): Barkevious Mingo, DE/OLB, LSU

After already devoting a top 10 pick to offense, the Rams will turn to Mingo to boost their pass rush.

10. Seattle Seahawks: Robert Woods, WR, USC

As Barkley's main weapon, Woods talent was on vivid display. He will give the Seahawks a true deep threat.

11. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Oday Aboushi, OT, Virginia

The Bucs must improve their offensive line. Aboushi is a talented and well-rounded tackle.

12. Buffalo Bills: Landry Jones, QB, Oklahoma

Ryan Fitzpatrick proved in 2011 that he is far to inconsistent to be the permanent answer. Unless he has a giant breakthrough this season, the Bills will be ready to find someone to replace him. And Jones is a wonderful option.

He has the body and the arm that NFL teams covet. He also has a serious history of production. Scouts will want to see improvement in his decision-making and release point, but even if those gains are modest, he is still a lock for the first half of the first round.

He has way too much natural talent to last beyond then.

13. Tennessee Titans: Alex Okafor, DE, Texas

The Titans need to bolster their defensive line. Okafor is strong against both the run and rushing the passer.

14. Carolina Panthers: Keenan Allen, WR, California

Expect the Panthers to go defensive heavy in this draft, which will free them up to go after this productive, gifted, big-bodied WR.

15. Denver BroncosDesmond Trufant, CB, Washington

Champ Bailey can't play forever. The ultra-quick Trufant will be a nice replacement.

16. Kansas City Chiefs: Tyler Wilson, QB, Arkansas

Wilson has a nice arm and accuracy. The Chiefs will groom him to replace Matt Cassel

As a junior he completed 63 percent of his passes for 3,638 yards and 24 touchdowns. He has a good body for the NFL.

And while he just has one year of starting experience and his ability to read defenses needs seasoning, he makes great decisions once the play begins.

Combine that with his good accuracy, and he rarely throws a bad pass.

17. Chicago Bears: Bjoern Werner, DE, Florida State

The strong and explosive Werner will fit right in with the Monsters of the Midway mentality in Chicago.

18. Cincinnati BengalsBrandon Jenkins, DE/OLB, Florida State

The Bengals will make it two straight DEs from FSU when they add a little youth to a position that will need it.

19. Atlanta Falcons: Barrett Jones, OT/G/C, Alabama

Free agency has ravaged the Falcons line. They will turn to Jones, whose versatility will be welcomed.

20. Dallas CowboysT.J. McDonald, S, USC

The Cowboys will finally land the safety their defense needs. McDonald has the size and ability to play either safety position.

21. New York Jets: Marcus Lattimore, RB, South Carolina

As long as Lattimore recovers well from his knee injury, he will be a huge hit in NY. He has speed, size and plays hard.

22. Philadelphia Eagles: Jonathan Brown, OLB, Illinois

The Eagles will have a fearsome LB corps with Brown and DeMeco Ryans. Brown is athletic and smart with a nose for the ball.

23. New Orleans Saints: Jarvis Jones, DE/OLB, Georgia

Jones will be a nice boost to the Saints pass rush as they deal with the aging of Will Smith.

24: San Diego Chargers: Tyler Eifert, TE, Notre Dame

Antonio Gates is rapidly approaching the end. The Chargers are used to having a great TE, and they will take the best one in this draft.

25. San Francisco 49ersJonathan Banks, CB, Mississippi State

The 49ers defense doesn't need much, but a shutdown corner would be a huge boost. Banks has that potential.

26. Baltimore Ravens: Manti Te'o, ILB, Notre Dame

Te'o is an excellent choice to replace the aging Ray Lewis

27. Green Bay Packers: Tony Jefferson, S, Oklahoma

The Packers pass defense fell apart last season. Jefferson has great instincts and a knack for making big plays.

28. Pittsburgh SteelersChris Faulk, OT, LSU

The Steelers must add toughness up front. Faulk will help them return to their power offense days.

29. Detroit Lions: Tyrann Mathieu, CB/S, LSU

Turning around the Lions pass defense is not going to be an easy task. The versatile and explosive Mathieu will be a huge boost.

30. Houston Texans: Sean Porter, OLB, Texas A&M

Pass-rushing specialist Porter is nice replacement for the recently departed Mario Williams.

31. New England PatriotsKhaled Holmes, G/C, USC

The Patriots are going to have to add some youth to their offensive line.

32. New York Giants: Kawann Short, DT, Purdue

The Giants will make their defensive line stays well stocked.
