NFL Draft 2012: Teams That Will Come Up Empty on Draft Day

Cheyenne HollisJun 7, 2018

NFL teams spend countless hours on meticulous planning and scouting to ensure every possible scenario is covered during draft day.

Plans, backup plans and backup, backup plans are all put in place by general managers and player personnel staffs across the league, but that will not be enough.

The NFL Draft is still a crapshoot despite teams desperate attempts to find some sort of scientific formula for success. Every year some teams panic and shoot themselves in the foot.

For every Peyton Manning there is a David Carr and for every Adrian Peterson there is a Curtis Enis.

Not every team can be a winner on draft day and while every fans hope the players their team nabs in April help push them towards one last game in February, it does not always work out like that.

Here are a few of the teams that will come up empty on draft day.

Oakland Raiders

The Oakland Raiders have three major problems.

They only have five picks, their roster is in shambles and the silver and black have an awful track record on draft day.

It will be Oakland's first NFL Draft without Al Davis calling the shots and new GM Reggie McKenzie is under pressure to get the most bang for his buck.

Unfortunately for McKenzie, the previous regime left him with serious cap issues and traded three picks in the 2012 draft for quarterbacks.

The jury is still out on Carson Palmer. Terrelle Pryor is a dud, and Jason Campbell is no longer with the team.

Even if the Raiders can find four players who contribute to the team this season, they will have come up empty because they need so much more.

Oakland's draft will be diabolical if McKenzie can only land one or two contributors.

McKenzie was part of the successful draft process in Green Bay but he still needs more time to implement that culture and mentality in the Raiders' front office.

Chances are this year will be another bust bonanza in Oakland. Of course, the team could decide to trade the rest of their draft picks for quarterbacks as well. After all, it is the Raiders.

Like the Raiders, the Saints only have five picks in the draft. Unlike the Raiders, the Saints have a much better draft record in recent history.

This season could be different. The team is still putting plans in place for for the suspensions of Sean Payton and Joe Vitt while preparing for the impending player punishments.

Rookies are going to be walking into a huge mess once training camp starts with coaches frequently changing. In a league where consistency is key, the Saints will have very little of it.

It is also likely that any defensive players drafted will be thrown into the fray immediately because of the suspensions. It does not matter who the Saints draft, poor preparation and a baptism by fire does not usually yield success.

Imagine being a freshman at a high school where there principal, vice principal, a few teachers and some of the most important students were suspended.

Chances are it would seriously hinder adapting to the culture regardless of what the remaining staff did to limit possible problems.

That is what every Saints' draftee is facing this season. They could be able to make their way through the chaos, but chances are New Orleans will strike out this year.

Whatever team drafts Ryan Tannehill

The team that selects Ryan Tannehill will be in an untenable position.

Their entire draft will rest upon his success. He seems destined to be a bust. The team that takes him will have their 2012 dubbed a mistake.

There will be a bunch of players taken after him who will out perform him and contribute to winning teams.

Fans will not forget this. Even if the team that drafts Tannehill picks up a couple of starters in the later rounds, he will always be the face of their draft haul.

It took the Lions years to recover from the disaster of Joey Harrington. Think of all the other players the Cardinals could have selected instead of Matt Leinhart.

Both teams were able to pick some other solid players in the draft they took their quarterbacks, but it is the flop behind center that everyone remembers.
