Jacksonville Jaguars Mock Draft: Buying and Selling Matt Miller's Picks
Matt Miller has been crushing the draft preparation for the last few months, and by now his fingers are cramped, his eyes are glazed over, and he's desperately ready for break.
Before he gets to take a nap for the first time in 2012, he graces us with his final seven-round mock draft. Rather than be appreciative of his exhaustive research and masterful execution, I'm going to pick it apart and look for flaws.
Next up is the Jacksonville Jaguars. Do we buy or sell Matt's picks?
Round 1
Matt's Pick: Melvin Ingram, DE, South Carolina
Nate's Vote: SELL
Nate's Pick: Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma State
Ingram is fine, and the Jags should be happy with him, but with Blackmon and Gilmore on the board, I can't see the Jaguars going with Ingram.
Round 2
Matt's Pick: Kendall Reyes, DT, UConn
Nate's Vote: SELL
Nate's Pick: Jonathan Martin, OT, Stanford
Blaine Gabbert took far too many sacks last year, and while that's largely on him, upgrading the putrid Guy Whimper wouldn't be a bad move. This team has got to figure out the passing offense, and an upgrade at tackle is a big piece of that.
Round 3
Matt's Pick: Nick Toon, WR, Wisconsin
Nate's Vote: BUY
Toon would be a good compliment to Robinson, as Miller notes.
Round 4
Matt's Pick: Trenton Robinson, FS, MSU
Nate's Vote: BUY
I'm rarely going to argue with a pass defender, and neither Dawan Landry nor Dwight Lowery cloaked themselves in glory in 2011.
Round 5
Matt's Pick: Lucas Nix, OG, Pitt
Nate's Vote: BUY
Round 5 is the right place to start "guard hunting." The Jags had three solid lineman last year, and adding depth at guard is a good late-round strategy.
Round 6
Matt's Pick: Donnie Fletcher, CB, Boston College
Nate's Vote: BUY
I had a corner already off Miller's board here (Janzen Jackson), so Fletcher would be a credible option.
Round 7
Matt's Pick: Chandler Harnish, QB, Northern Illinois
Nate's Vote: BUY
I had them taking Kellen Moore, but Harnish has more prototypical size. Regardless of which quarterback they take, spending a late-round pick on a signal-caller is not a bad plan.
BUY or SELL Matt Miller's Draft?
I vote BUY.
I don't love his first two picks, but we are in lock step with the rest of the draft. Miller's draft doesn't make the Jaguars dramatically better in 2012, but most of that burden probably falls on Blaine Gabbert's shoulders anyway.
My only fear is that by not helping Gabbert out in the early rounds, the franchise will have an excuse not to cut bait with him should he struggle in year two.
