Arsenal vs. Chelsea: Disappointing Draw for Chelsea Hurts Champions League Hopes

Nicholas GossApr 21, 2012

Chelsea and Arsenal drew 0-0 at the Emirates on Saturday morning in London, and it was not an encouraging result for the Blues in their quest to qualify for the Champions League next season.

Chelsea, who have played one less match than Arsenal, are still sixth in the Premier League table and are seven points behind the Gunners, who sit third in the standings. Newcastle and Tottenham are tied for fourth, and both have a game in-hand on Chelsea.

Chelsea did not play well against Arsenal, and their attack was not able to create enough quality scoring chances to take all three points from this match.

Once again, Fernando Torres and Daniel Sturridge were not able to work well together in the attacking third of the pitch, and their lack of chemistry is a real problem for Chelsea when striker Didier Drogba is injured.

While defeat would have ended the Blues' chances of catching Arsenal in the table, they still should have attacked more and gone after the three points at stake today.

Spurs and Newcastle are quality clubs, and finishing ahead of them will not be easy. With challenging league matches against Liverpool and Newcastle still left on Chelsea's schedule, they have to win nearly every match remaining to ensure a top four finish.

The Blues also have at least one more Champions League match and the FA Cup Final against Liverpool to play this season, so the multitude of matches could be an issue for Chelsea.

Chelsea didn't want to put themselves at risk of losing key players to injury ahead of their second leg against Barcelona in the Champions League semifinal, but not winning this match against Arsenal could cost them a spot in European play next season.

Chelsea did not do enough to win on Saturday, and they might look back on this match as a reason why they didn't qualify for Europe. They didn't attack enough, and there wasn't enough energy nor a sense of urgency among the players.

Given the situation they are in, Chelsea's performance against the Gunners was really disappointing, and now, they must take three points from almost all their remaining league matches.
