Alabama BCS Trophy Shattered: Nick Saban Has Perfect Persepctive on Loss
The prized BCS Trophy belonging to the defending champion Alabama Crimson Tide was shattered, and head coach Nick Saban puts a perfect spin on the expensive loss.
As ESPN reports, the Waterford crystal trophy given to Alabama following their 2011 title was shattered when the father of a player accidentally bumped the display after having his foot catch the rug it was standing on.
The thoughts on the subject range from outrage to complete understanding, and Saban issues that we should all just relax. It's just a trophy after all.
The Anniston Star's Michael Casagrande reports on the fallen trophy and quotes the head coach as such.
"Breaking the crystal ball, even though it’s very meaningful, nobody got hurt. Nobody meant to do any harm and I’m sure we can replace it. It’s (not as) bad as everyone’s making it out to be and I don’t want the parent of the player who had the mishap to feel bad about what happened.
"
Allow me to sum up if I may. Stuff happens, and you can replace what ever four letter expletive in the place for stuff if you like.
The trophy is no doubt valuable, approximately $30,000 by the ESPN report's estimation. I would even say that it's priceless to a great many Alabama fans who hold it as a symbol of the team's success.
There is no doubt that a father who must have been beaming with pride one moment was struck with sheer horror and dismay the next.
It doesn't help that this has turned into national news with many pondering what should be done to replace such a valuable asset.
As Saban points out, it will indeed be replaced. There is no reason to make more of this than it is, because accidents happen and trophies fall.
Let he who has never tripped in their life cast the first barbed comment. ESPN reminds us that Florida's Orson Charles dropped the trophy in 2008 and Florida State had a couple stolen in 2004.
There are for more important things in life. No need to cry over spilled crystal.
