5 Reasons Why Derrick Rose Needs Another Superstar on the Chicago Bulls

Oliver Crawford IIIJun 7, 2018

Will Chicago make a move for another superstar?

In 2012, even with the best record in the NBA, Chicago was in the market to get another big name, notably Dwight Howard and Pau Gasol. The deal reportedly fell through for the Lakers big man because L.A didn't want to take on Carlos Boozer, or his massive contract, for that matter.

As for the superman sweepstakes to acquire Dwight Howard from the Magic? Well, Howard showed very little interest in teaming up with Rose; an opportunity that would form arguably the best one-two punch in the NBA.

Howard has acted like a child this year, and he has irritated NBA fans all season, particularly in recent weeks when he reportedly requested for his coach, Stan Van Gundy to be fired

Bulls fans are likely very happy to have dodged a bullet to acquire this egotistical player, however the thought of D-Rose and Howard teaming up would make a lot of GM's around the league lose sleep at night.

Although Chicago seems to be happy with the team currently in place, the thought of adding another superstar will remain in the back of many Bulls fans minds, and here's why.

Pau Gasol Is the Perfect Compliment to Rose

1 of 5

Pau Gasol is a great talent for the Lakers and on the season has averaged 17.4 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. Gasol would represent a significant upgrade at the center position, and he is much better than any big man currently on the Chicago roster.

More importantly he is a proven winner, and has won championships for the Lakers alongside Kobe Bryant.

This guy's game is fantastic, and he can score in a variety of ways. Whether it is with his back to the rim or floating out and hitting the mid-range jumper, Gasol is a beast.

It seems that he is great in the locker room as well, and this trade was very close to being completed if it had not been for the Lakers lack of desire in the package the Bulls were offering.

Although this trade didn't happen before the NBA trade deadline, don't be surprised if the management pulls the trigger on this trade in the summer, particularly around the NBA draft.

The management may able to package a deal including draft picks, for the talented big man. The Spaniard made it clear that he was not pleased with the trade talk during the deadline, and it seemed to have been a large distraction for him.

If the Bulls were able to pull this trade off, that would be huge for Chicago, particularly if they could keep Luol Deng.

The Bulls Likely Won't Improve from the Draft

Having the best record in the NBA has its perks, however the NBA Draft is not one of them. With the best record in the NBA comes with getting one of the higher picks in the draft, so improving a team right away is generally unlikely.

Last year with the 23rd pick, the Bulls drafted Nikola Mirotic, a player who still plays in Spain.

Prime example of not improving from the draft immediately is the selection of Mirotic. Although this player may have a solid upside, he never played for the Bulls this season.

With the other draft pick a year ago, the Bulls drafted Jimmy Butler out of Marquette. Butler isn't a bad fit for the Bulls, but he didn't add much to the team. Chicago desperately needed another shooter in the draft, and Butler is basically Luol Deng without the range on the jump shot.

Butler may very well turn out to be a solid NBA player, however he has much more developing to do.

If the Bulls want to improve the team heading into 2012, the draft will likely not be the way to do it.

Who Wouldn't Want to Play for Tom Thibodeau?

Along with one of the premiere players in the NBA, the Bulls also possess arguably the best coach in the league.

In back-to-back seasons, Chicago will have the best record in the league, and Tom Thibodeau is a big reason for that success. There is a great chance Thibodeau will be Coach of the Year this season, and that would make that back-to-back as well. Following this season, the management better make Thibodeau the highest paid coach in the NBA, because he is worth every penny.

He is a genius with the X's and O's and is a defensive guru. What's more is that he has the respect from all of his players, and in a superstar league, that isn't always guaranteed, just ask Stan Van Gundy.

Rose Is the Perfect Teammate

4 of 5

In a game full of egos and selfishness Derrick Rose is the exact opposite of that. Last week against the Miami Heat, Rose was pulled from the game in favor of C.J. Watson due to a horrible evening shooting the ball.

In many situations when a star player is pulled they typically do not react very well. Can you imagine this same situation in Miami or Orlando?

That would not fly.

Rose, instead of reacting like your typical superstar, was seen cheering for his teammates and was happy because the team won.

When your leader shows that type of character, particularly when things aren't going his way, players take notice of that. If the Bulls want to land another superstar, the prospect of playing with Derrick Rose will be a big part of that; unless you're you know...Dwight Howard.

Point Guards Can't Win Championships by Themselves

5 of 5

Isiah Thomas is one of the rare point guards in recent memory that were able to lead a team to an NBA title at the point guard position. Derrick Rose is great, but it is very hard for a point guard to accomplish this feat.

D-rose is the man in Chicago, no doubt, but this is a very difficult task to ask any PG. A year ago, Rose had his best season when he was named the MVP, but down the stretch it simply wasn't good enough. Even with the help of Luol Deng, the Bulls still fell short.

A big part of this is because of the height disparity. It is too easy to put a tall defender on Rose in late situations, and without a reliable post threat, this is an outstanding tactic.

Boozer and Deng are great complimentary players, and this is no knock on them, but they are simply not superstars. If Chicago wants to win and win big, they will need to make a move for another big name player.

If this happens, the sky is the limit in Chicago.
