2012 NFL Draft: San Diego GM AJ Smith 'Wide Open' to Trade

Sigmund BloomJun 7, 2018

San Diego Chargers general manager AJ Smith let the league know that he continues to be "wide open" when it comes to move in the draft, but also gave them a warning—don't be a johnny-come-lately.

Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports that Smith left all draft trade possibilities open, just as he has in the past:

"

“We’re wide open,” Smith said Thursday. “We have been always since I’ve been here, and we’ve done everything. We’ve gone up in the attack. We’ve bailed out in the past, and we’ve stayed where we are. It depends on circumstance.”

Gehlken points out that the Chargers have made a move in six of the last nine drafts, totaling eight deals over the span.

Smith does have a restriction on trades:

"

“Don’t bother with three minutes left or less,” Smith said, “to run some concocted idea that you may have because you’re ready to do something and you’re presenting your case. I’m not interested."

"

The Ravens learned the hard lesson about last-second first-round deals last year when the Bears didn't call in their trade to league office, causing the Ravens clock to elapse (they still got their target, Colorado CB Jimmy Smith).

Assuming the trade partners do get in touch with Smith on time, who could the Chargers make a deal with on April 26?

ESPN Florida's Charlie Bernstein brings up Houston (No. 26) as a possibility if a wide receiver falls to No. 18. Notre Dame's Michael Floyd would probably be the target. The Texans would value his run-blocking as much as any team in the league.

He also mentions Detroit and New England as possibilities if a safety (presumably Alabama's Mark Barron) or cornerback (presumably South Carolina's Stephon Gilmore or Alabama's Dre Kirkpatrick) fall. Bernstein posits that those teams would want to get ahead of Chicago and Tennessee. The Bears are also a good candidate to take Floyd if he falls.

Other targets for another team's trade up:

Texas A&M QB Ryan Tannehill: If the "he's overrated by the media" school of thought is prevalent in league circles, Tannehill should tumble out of the top 15. The Browns passed on Brady Quinn in 2007, only to trade back into the first round to get him. They would only need to move up four spots from No. 22 if Tannehill falls to the Chargers' 18th pick.

Boston College LB Luke Kuechly: If Kuechly gets past the Chiefs, Seahawks and Bengals, trading up for the clear top ILB on the board could be tempting.

Stanford OG David DeCastro: Like Kuechly, DeCastro could easily be a pick in the top 15 as a best player available, but guard is a devalued position, and one that is very deep in this draft. The Chargers could use DeCastro, but they could also use extra draft capital and their war room may prefer a later OL target.
