Bobby Petrino or Ozzie Guillen: Who Was the Biggest Offender?
To fly off the road on a motorcycle with an adulteress in tow, or to have a verbal love affair with a ruthless dictator, that is the question.
Well, it normally wouldn’t be a question, but with Bobby Petrino and Ozzie Guillen’s recent antics, it becomes a question. They leave us trying to figuring out who the biggest offender of public idiocy is.
Both men are in extremely high-profile positions and have built a track record of success at every point they have stopped in their careers. Both Petrino and Guillen are known to be edgy—Guillen more so than Petrino.
Petrino and His Hester Prynne
In the past few weeks, the sports world has been in a short lull period, waiting on Major League Baseball to get cranked up and for the NFL draft to take center stage for a few days. Out of nowhere, the nation is shocked to learn that Bobby Petrino has been in a motorcycle accident.
Count me as surprised that the guy had a motorcycle, much less one that he would wreck with a 25-year-old newly hired assistant on the back.
On April 2, reports began to surface that Petrino had been hospitalized with injuries sustained from the accident. Most fans of college football lifted thoughts and prayers for him and his family.
Just four short days after the initial report of Petrino’s accident, Sports Illustrated released an article describing the aftermath of the wreck. Petrino told Larry Hendren, a passerby who saw the accident, to not call 911. What are you trying to cover up, Bobby?
Now we know.
Jessica Dorrell was on the back of the motorcycle. Dorrell was hired at the end of March to be an assistant inside the football program, working closely with Petrino for quality control of on-campus recruiting, among other things.
Much more than a football assistant, Dorrell was Petrino’s mistress. Not only did Petrino pass over numerous moral and ethical lines, but he broke state law by hiring his lover. He even gifted $20,000 in cash to her.
Wow. She hit the jackpot, and he is a tool bag.
Ozzie Guillen and Castro
In true Ozzie Guillen fashion, the spotlight has now been stolen and placed firmly on the new Miami Marlins manager. Guillen told Time magazine in a recent interview, “I love Fidel Castro.”
Wait, what?
Unfortunately for Guillen and the Cuban-American population found in Miami, FL, Guillen did indeed utter those words. A heartfelt apology was given Tuesday during his press conference announcing a five-game suspension, but was it enough?
The comments were stupid and obviously brought about a wealth of emotions to a community that has escaped the grip of the dictator. Isn’t this Ozzie Guillen, though?
When the Marlins hired Guillen, they knew what they were getting. He is a fiery manager that says some of the craziest things off the cuff, and he always has. Guillen should not have surprised anyone with these comments.
Granted, he should have never uttered the words that he loves a ruthless dictator, but at least he didn’t break any state or federal laws with his words. He actually displayed his first amendment rights, as unfortunate as it may be.
In the end, this is Guillen being Guillen. In his defense, he may have been a bit tipsy. After all, just weeks ago he admitted to drinking after every game, which could only help his logic and reasoning skills.
Who is the Worst Offender?
With both Petrino and Guillen owning a national spotlight, their behavior has scarred their reputations and their careers indefinitely. Both have a large hill to climb for a number of reasons.
Which of the two made the worst decision, and which decision was least expected and most offensive?
I contend that Petrino is the worst offender to the sports world in a landslide. Petrino not only committed adultery, but he hired his lover and was dumb enough to take her on a non-helmeted motorcycle ride.
Guillen shot his mouth off, but he always does. There is nothing new to the stupid comments that come from Ozzie Guillen.
When I heard that Guillen uttered his Castro comments, I shrugged my shoulders and chalked it up to Guillen being himself. His suspension is warranted, now move on to another gaffe.
Petrino left me shaking my head. How stupid can you be? The layers of idiocy surrounding the situation are Lifetime original movie-worthy. Petrino is by far the worst public offender of the two.
At least Guillen can say he was drinking.
