NBA Free Agency: 3 Teams That Must Break the Bank for Steve Nash

Roberto PayneApr 9, 2012

Steve Nash will be a free agent after this season, and he will no doubt command attention from several teams.

Nash has expressed the desire to sign a three-year contract, which would pay him until the age of 41. That is old for an NBA player, but Nash keeps himself in fantastic shape and could be effective into his early forties.

Read on to find out which three teams should break the bank to sign the two-time MVP in order to contend for a title.

Atlanta Hawks

1 of 3

The Atlanta Hawks have lacked a top-tier point guard for years now and Steve Nash could be the perfect floor general to run the show.

Nash wouldn’t have to force his offensive game and could remain a playmaker since the Hawks already have players like Joe Johnson, Al Horford and Josh Smith to score points.

Acquiring Nash would push Jeff Teague to the bench, where he instantly becomes one of the better backup point guards in the league. Not to mention Teague would learn a ton under the guidance of a seasoned veteran like Nash.

A starting lineup featuring Nash, Johnson, Smith, and Horford would easily be an upper-level unit in the league, and with a decent bench the Hawks could be a very dangerous team in the Eastern Conference.

Orlando Magic

2 of 3

The Orlando Magic have recently been in the news for all the wrong reasons, whether it be Dwight Howard wanting coach Stan Van Gundy fired or GM Otis Smith claiming everything is fine in the Magic Kingdom.

Orlando is trying to convince Howard to stay for more than one more year, so the organization needs to upgrade its roster.

The Magic were rumored to be interested in Steve Nash at the trade deadline, but obviously nothing came to fruition.

Nash is the ideal point guard to perform the pick-and-roll game with Howard, and it would be worth it for the Magic to clear some cap space in order to sign him.

Portland Trail Blazers

3 of 3

The Portland Trail Blazers were supposed to contend for a high seed in the Western Conference this season, but offseason acquisitions of Raymond Felton and Jamal Crawford haven’t worked out. They are, in my opinion, the most disappointing team of the NBA so far this season.

Felton will be off the books this year, and Crawford could follow. That opens up a huge hole at point guard and Steve Nash would be the ideal option to fill it.

The Blazers already have several solid, young players to build around in LaMarcus Aldridge, Nicolas Batum and Wesley Matthews, so Nash would simply need to provide veteran leadership and spread the rock around.

The Blazers would be extremely formidable if they signed Nash and selected two quality young players with their two 2012 first-round draft picks.
