Georgia Football: Updating the 5 Best Spring Football Battles

Brian JonesJun 1, 2018

With the Georgia Bulldogs getting close to the end of spring practice, the position battles are heating up.

The battles will continue through the G-Day game and will conclude during fall camp, so head coach Mark Richt will have plenty of time to evaluate who will come out on top.

This has been an interesting spring for position battles, because despite having a bunch of starters returning, this team could look very different once opening weekend comes around.

Here's an update on the five best position battles.

Tight End

1 of 5

Finding a tight end has never been a problem for the Bulldogs. So, no matter wins between Arthur Lynch and Jay Rome, the Bulldogs know they will have no problems finding a replacement for Orson Charles.

Based on what Rome did Saturday, he has taken the lead for the No. 1 spot, as he caught two touchdown passes in the scrimmage this past Saturday.

Lynch has more experience and could be the starter when the Bulldogs take on Buffalo, but Rome has the makings to be another star tight end for the Bulldogs.

Running Backs

2 of 5

This battle is not so much about who is going to be the No. 1 back, it's about who is going to be in the running back rotation once the regular season begins.

During spring practice, Isaiah Crowell has been the No. 1 running back, and deciding the No. 2 and No. 3 backs has been and will be a challenge for Richt and company. Richard Samuel, Ken Malcolme and Brandon Horton are back, along with true freshman Keith Marshall who has looked good so far this spring.

And let's not forget about Todd Gurley, who will join the team this summer and could compete for a lot of playing time.

Hopefully, Richt and the rest of the coaching staff will have a better idea of which three will get the majority of carries once spring practice concludes.

Cornerback

3 of 5

Let's be clear that Branden Smith and Sanders Commings are the starters and they are the best corners the Bulldogs have. But since they will miss the first game of the season (Commings will miss the second game as well), the Bulldogs will need to find out which players will step up and fill the void.

Malcolm Mitchell has been getting a lot of reps at corner along with wide receiver and should win one of the spots.

Damian Swann  has also looked good during spring drills and should win the other spot if he keeps it up.

As far as who could give those two players a run for their money, Blake Sailors, Devin Bowman and Quintavious Harrow have been seeing a lot of action at corner and should see playing time at the start of the season.

Safety

4 of 5

Bacarri Rambo is facing a four-game suspension, so the Bulldogs will certainly need a young player to step up.

Leading the race this spring is Corey Moore, who played on special teams last season. Harrow and Norman are also getting looks at safety, but Moore looks to be the most SEC-ready.

Marc Deas was a guy who could compete with Moore for the starting position, but because he is not happy with his role on the team, he has decided to transfer.

Offensive Line

5 of 5

On the offensive line, there are three position battles to watch. Even though offensive line coach Will Friend said he does not have a starting five yet, returning starters Chris Burnette and Kenarious Gates will not be riding the bench this year.

Austin Long and Watts Danztler have been battling at right tackle, Dallas Lee and David Andrews are fighting for the center position, and Mark Beard is looking to grab the left tackle spot.

The offensive line won't be decided after the G-Day game because the Bulldogs will have John Theus and Greg Pyke coming in to fight for playing time as well as Kolton Houston, who should have his eligibility restored before the season begins.
