James Justice: How Will Dunk Contest Win Impact Pint-Sized Flyer's Draft Stock?
When you stand 5'9" with at least a 50-inch vertical leap, it is easy to get people to stand up and take notice. James Justice was able to steal the show at the NCAA Slam Dunk Contest on Thursday night, winning the event in spectacular fashion.
The Martin Methodist product only got into the contest because of an online vote that was conducted after the original participants were announced.
Now that Justice has captivated the nation with his unique dunking ability, the next step will be to figure out what, if anything, it means for his NBA prospects.
This year's draft is not very deep, though it is expected to have a lot of high-end talent at the top, so Justice could find himself getting some love late in the second round.
Justice could also find himself with another offer on the table if the NBA doesn't work out. Raphielle Johnson of CollegeBasketballTalk.com pointed out that five other slam dunk champions are currently playing for the Harlem Globetrotters, including Jacob Tucker, who won the event last year.
Given Justice's limited exposure, small size and fact that he played against NAIA competition, it is going to be incredibly difficult for him to break the NBA wall.
Spud Webb and Muggsy Bogues were able to make it into the league despite their small stature, but they played college basketball at North Carolina State and Wake Forest, respectively.
The talent gap between the NAIA and Division-I college basketball is astronomical. That's not to say Justice can't do it, but the odds are stacked against him.
For now, the Globetrotters would be his best bet to keep his basketball career going. He fits perfectly with the kind of show that they put on and he will be able to increase his exposure in the process.
