USMNT: Top 10 Tweets of the Week (Vol. 4)
What do you do when you're young, gifted and famous? You open a Twitter account and tell the world your business, of course.
Musicians, actors or athletes—everyone needs to let off a little steam now and then. For those of us who cover U.S. soccer, we're just happy that so many of the players choose to do it so publicly.
This week we've got boycotts, Words with Friends, and a holiday that men everywhere are going to want to know about.
Welcome to Vol. 4 of the Top 10 Tweets of the Week from the player pool of the U.S. National Team.
No. 10: Eric Lichaj Boycotts the Olympics
1 of 10It's admirable when people feel the need to stand with their friends. Following the United States' elimination from CONCACAF Olympic qualifying, Eric Lichaj decided he'd just be done with the whole thing. From @EricLichaj:
""Looks like I'm not going to be watching the Olympics in London anymore. USA didn't qualify."
"
Eric, lend me your ear for just a second. While I'm sure the guys on the U-23s appreciate the solidarity, no one's saying you can't watch the Olympics at all.
So simmer down a little and join the rest of us as we take the rare opportunity to be interested in the discuss or to wonder aloud why synchronized swimming is a sport. Those are your rights as an American.
No. 9: Nick Rimando Invites You to Shop for Groceries with Him
2 of 10Just because they're famous, sometimes athletes mistakenly assume you care about all the minute details of their life. Nick Rimando made that mistake this week. From @NickRimando:
""@KyleBeckerman and I will be hanging out at the Whole Foods store in Trolley Square from 3:30-5:00PM today. Come say hi if your in the hood."
"
Now Nick, I'm sure you and Kyle are nice guys. You're right at the top of my favorite people on twitter (for your Bachelor addiction, if nothing else). But no one is trying to come shopping with you.
Go get your carrots and Hot Pockets, and we'll see you at the stadium.
No. 8: Stuart Holden Makes a Big Mistake
3 of 10Sometimes you say something and you can never take it back. Sometimes it's a little thing. Sometimes it's not so little. Stuart Holden made a big mistake this week. From @stuholden:
""Today is 1 of the scariest days as an older brother. My 'baby' sister has turned 21 ! I feel both old and petrified! Happy Bday sis, love u!"
"
Jozy Altidore immediately responded with a tweet reading, "Oh is she now". Unfortunately, he deleted it before I could grab the exact quote. But it's just that kind of reaction that Holden can now be scared of.
When you put your sister's new found adulthood on the internet, suddenly all the friends you haven't talked to in awhile start calling to check in.
"And how's your sister doing, by the way?" That's a question Holden is going to hear a lot this week.
No. 7: Sean Johnson Makes the Best of Things
4 of 10Sean Johnson is just days removed from the worst moment of his professional life. As the U.S. Olympic dream-ending shot from Jaime Alas went into the net, Johnson probably wanted to crawl into a hole and never come out.
But he did come out. From @sjohn25:
""Gotta turn negatives into positives and channel it into motivation. Proud of all my teammates and all the heart and grit they showed
"#USMNT"
I could come up with a funny crack. Something about turning a save into a goal. But it's definitely too soon.
I'm just happy to see Johnson get up, dust himself off and get on with what I'm predicting will be a very successful career.
No. 6: Nick Rimando Finally Gets His Remote Back
5 of 10Nick Rimando has kids. I've got kids. So I can relate to having very little control over what is going on in your own house. The difference is that my son was out of the house on Sunday, so I got to watch the entire Old Firm derby in peace.
Not so much for Nick. From @nickrimando:
""Watching Backyardigans until I convinced Jett to let me turn on the Old Firm. Jett says 'Blue Power Rangers winning!' yep 3-2 @BocaBoca3"
"
Don't feel too bad for Rimando. Backyardigans is a good show. If you're going to be stuck watching cartoons instead of the big game, you could do worse.
No. 5: Clint Dempsey Gets Serenaded
6 of 10Clint Dempsey is the man at Fulham these days. As the man, you might expect the fans to serenade you with your own song. As the man, even children grow up learning the words. From @clint_dempsey:
""So cute ha @Lucysavixen: http://twitvid.com/S1I9E - My Eliana (4) singing the @clint_dempsey song."
"
Wondering why this is in the top ten? Click the twitvid link and be prepared to get overwhelmed by the utter cuteness.
No. 4: Jurgen Klinsmann Tells Us One Player Who Will Be on His Next Roster
7 of 10United States fans are constantly trying to figure out where the next great striker will come from. This week, Jurgen Klinsmann gave a clue as to where he's been looking lately. From @j_klinsmann:
""Another goal for @herculezg, who keeps finding the net. Well done!"
"
I don't mean to start something, but Herculez Gomez has been beating MLS teams like they stole something in the CONCACAF Champions League.
And with nine goals in the last seven games for Santos Laguna, Gomez has finally figured out the best way to keep his name in Klinsmann's mind.
No. 3: Maurice Edu's Favorite Holiday
8 of 10Everyone has a favorite holiday. Growing up I loved St. Patrick's Day because you got to pinch people. Now I love it for the green beer. But Maurice Edu discovered a new favorite this year. From @mauriceedu:
""Today's National Cleavage Day? Hmmmm"
"
I had no idea either, Maurice. Who do men have to thank for this blessed holiday? Wonderbra, of course.
No. 2: Landon Donovan Puts the Smackdown on Taylor Twellman
9 of 10Sometimes you win with grace and dignity. And other times you mock your opponent loudly and in public. Landon Donovan went with the later this week. From @landondonovan:
""Despite what he says on his telecasts, @TaylorTwellman does not beat me at Words With Friends"
"
Landon 426, Taylor 421. That'll show that announcing pretty boy. Your move Twellman.
No. 1: Juan Agudelo Says What We Were All Thinking
10 of 10Thousands and thousands of words have been written about the United States' failure to qualifying for the 2012 Olympic Games. But Juan Agudelo summed up the national sentiment with just one. Well, one letter and a lot of astericks. From @juanagudelo17:
"F********************************"
"*********************************"
"*********************************"
"*********************************"
"********"
Exactly Juan. Exactly.
