College Football Playoff: What Will Come out of BCS Commissioners' Meeting?

Randy ChambersMar 26, 2012

The BCS conference commissioners will join forces today at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and try to inch closer to coming to some type of agreement for a playoff system in college football. But "inch" is the key word, as not much is expected to come from these meetings.

The BCS cycle will continue to run through the 2013 season, so a decision isn't needed right away, although they would like a plan in place by the time summer arrives this year.

The Pac-12 would like a four-team playoff that is filled with the conference champions. The Big Ten would also like a four-team playoff, but they would prefer that the semifinal games would be home games for the higher seeds.

Big 12 commissioner Chuck Neinas also agrees with the Pac-12 and would like a four-team playoff to include conference champions. And while SEC commissioner Mike Slive would also like a playoff, he doesn't agree that it should include just conference champions.

“I’m willing to have a conversation about (only conference champions), but if you were going to ask me today, that would not be the way I want to go,” Slive said. “It really is early in the discussions, notwithstanding what some commissioners say publicly. There’s still a lot of information that needs to be generated.”

While it appears that a four-team playoff is the most likely scenario, there are still several issues that need to be ironed out. Where the games are played, how the top four teams are determined and what to do with the bowl games are just some of the issues that will likely be discussed.

Then, of course, you would have to decide where the championship game will be held, and there are already rumors floating around with who should win that bid.

"We're very interested in the future of the BCS and bringing a game to Cowboys Stadium." Stadium spokesman Brett Daniels said.

Any meeting is a good thing when trying to hammer out a deal, but this looks to be one of several over the next several months. There are a lot of things to discuss and a total of 11 Div. 1-A (FBS) conferences that need to agree on one format.

It's a great thing that meetings are taking place, but don't expect college football to change overnight.
