Champions League Draw: Chelsea's Good Fortune Will Last Until Semifinals

Gabe ZaldivarMar 16, 2012

Chelsea's up-an- down season continues with one more vestige of good fortune, but it will most certainly be the last as the Blues are walking into semifinals disaster.

Chelsea continues to sputter to the finish line in the English Premier League, and have put the wealth of success in this season in the results from the Champions League.

They will have to settle with a final-four finish with the best club in the world.

The Champions League draws are in and Chelsea get a winnable game with one that would be a miracle win considering the season they have had.

Chelsea draws Benfica, hardly a dream match-up, but also not the clash that would have sent shivers through Stamford Bridge faithful.

If they do indeed move-on past that round, they get the winner of Barcelona and Real Madrid. If they do draw the Catalans, they would be playing no less than the hottest and most gifted team in the world.

The Blues have been so mired in inconsistency and infighting that yet another manager was sacked. Andre Villas-Boas' firing was more a sign of how awful things had become behind the scenes than is was a measure to invoke positive results.

However, Chelsea will take what they can get where they can get them.

After parting ways with their manager, Chelsea went on to get a stirring result in the Champions League against Napoli.

Skipper John Terry looked spry, and the squad was free-flowing all match. A good measure of positivity was breathed into the dressing room and you could tell on the player's faces.

It's an obvious note that Chelsea were handed one of the easier teams in the quarterfinals. As we have seen, though, nothing is easy for this team of veterans that can look like cagey vets in one instant and washed up has-beens in the next.

Chelsea draws Benfica on their continued road to redemption, but the journey is surely only to take them just short of the dream finish.
