Tracking Offseason Needs for Every NFL Team

Matt MillerJun 4, 2018

That old saying about there being no offseason in the NFL? It's true.

The New York Giants are still breaking in their "Super Bowl Champion" hats, and already, a new league year is upon us. With the NFL offseason broken down into two "seasons"—free agency and the draft—it's time to reset the team needs and focus on the five areas each team will be making improvements in this season.

Each team's top five needs are listed, as well as their franchise player and any signings they make. As new players are signed, traded or released, the needs will be updated. Now until the draft, Bleacher Report has your NFL offseason covered.

Buffalo Bills

1 of 32

The Buffalo Bills enter the 2012 offseason with clear directives to find pass-rushers, improve the protection for quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick and to shore up the offensive line.

First-Round Draft Order: Pick No. 10

Top Five Team Needs

1. Defensive End - COMPLETE

Buffalo will shift to a 4-3 defense in 2012 making defensive end the key directive this offseason. The team could consider reaching for a big-name free agent (Mario Williams) or using their first-round pick. Update: Signed DE Mario Williams

2. Left Tackle

Demetrius Bell played his best season during 2011, but he's a free agent. If the team doesn't re-sign Bell, the left tackle position is a big need.

3. Wide Receiver

Re-signing Stevie Johnson was huge, but he needs help. The Bills could look to add speed and size at the position, hoping to find a clear-cut No. 2 receiver opposite Johnson.

4. Cornerback

Buffalo drafted Aaron Williams last year, and they expect him to start in 2012, but the team is still lacking talent and depth. Drayton Florence had a very bad year, Leodis McKelvin has failed to develop into an elite cornerback and Terrence McGee turns 32 at midseason.

5. Outside Linebacker

With the move to the 4-3 defense, comes a need for a new type of outside linebacker. The Bills will look for both a strong-side and weak-side linebacker this offseason.

Miami Dolphins

2 of 32

A change to a 4-3 defense under new coach Joe Philbin and the pursuit of a free agent quarterback highlight the Miami Dolphin's offseason. Who they find to complete their transition to a 4-3 and who will be taking snaps from under center next season are the big question marks.

First-Round Draft Order: Pick No. 8

Top Five Team Needs

1. Quarterback

The Miami Dolphins expect to be in the running for Peyton Manning and Matt Flynn as they look to move on from free agent Chad Henne and upgrade over incumbent Matt Moore.

2. Right Tackle

Marc Colombo graded out as the worst right tackle in the NFL in our BR1000 rankings. The Dolphins could draft a right tackle as early as the first round if they sign a quarterback in free agency.

3. Defensive End

The Dolphins will move to a 4-3 base defense this year, which means finding a left defensive end to line-up opposite Cameron Wake on the right side.

4. Defensive Tackle

Paul Soliai is a free agent, opening up a need on the defensive line. Jared Odrick and veteran Randy Starks would be the starters as of now.

5. Outside Linebacker

Koa Misi and Kevin Burnett would be the opening day starters here, which isn't bad, but depth and speed are needed.

6. Wide Receiver

With Brandon Marshall traded to Chicago, the Dolphins have two third-round picks, but they also need a No. 1 wide receiver.

Franchise Player: None

Signed RB Jerome Messam (source)

New England Patriots

3 of 32

With two picks in the first round, the New England Patriots are in a great position to reload for a second straight AFC championship run. To do so, they'll need to make big additions on defense.

First-Round Draft Order: Pick No. 27 and Pick No. 31

Top Five Team Needs

1. Outside Linebacker

The Patriots will likely go back to their 3-4 defense in 2012, which means Bill Belichick must find pass-rushers.

2. Wide Receiver

It was obvious in the Super Bowl that the Patriots need wide receivers who can draw pressure off the tight ends. Finding a big, outside receiver to complement the existing pieces will be key.

3. Safety

Patrick Chung has been solid, but the team needs better play opposite him. Update: Signed Steve Gregory

4. Defensive End - COMPLETE

Whether the Patriots use a 3-4 or 4-3 defense in 2012, they need to find defensive ends to fit the schemes they run. Update: Signed Jonathan Fanene

5. Center

Dan Koppen missed the 2011 season with injury and may not be brought back. Even so, he's turning 33 years old this season, and a backup is needed. Update: Signed Dan Connolly

Franchise Player: Wide Receiver Wes Welker

New York Jets

4 of 32

The New York Jets can't expect to be big players in free agency with only a projected $7.1 million available. What they can do is comfortably draft the best player available in each round of the NFL draft.

First-Round Draft Order: Pick No. 16

Top Five Team Needs

1. Outside Linebacker

Facing Tom Brady twice a year puts plenty of pressure on the defense. Rex Ryan's crew is lacking on the edges.

2. Right Tackle

Wayne Hunter comes in as one of the worst right tackles in the game. New York needs an upgrade—quickly.

3. Wide Receiver

Santonio Holmes can't do it all alone, even though the Jets tried that method in 2011. Adding a big, physical receiver opposite him is a need.

4. Quarterback

Whether you believe in Mark Sanchez or not, the Jets would be wise to add a viable backup to step in should the Sanchize get hurt or fail to produce. Update: Signed Drew Stanton

5. Running Back

New offensive coordinator Tony Sparano loves to run the ball. Shonn Greene will get the bulk of the carries, but a backup is needed.

Baltimore Ravens

5 of 32

The Baltimore Ravens made it to the AFC championship game last year. In 2012, the front office will look to keep key free agents Ben Grubbs and Jarrett Johnson while making improvements through the draft to make another run at the Super Bowl.

First-Round Draft Order: Pick No. 29

Top Five Team Needs

1. Left Guard

The Ravens are expected to make a push for Ben Grubbs, but should he leave through free agency, the team will have a massive hole to fill.

2. Wide Receiver

Anquan Boldin and Torrey Smith are solid, but more help is needed. Lee Evans didn't produce as expected in 2011.

3. Running Back

Even with Ray Rice under the franchise tag, Baltimore needs to add depth after Ricky Williams' retirement.

4. Inside Linebacker

Ray Lewis isn't getting younger, and Jameel McClain is a key free agent.

5. Outside Linebacker

If the Ravens don't re-sign Jarrett Johnson, they will look to the offseason to add depth and potentially a starter at outside linebacker.

Franchise Player: Running Back Ray Rice

2012 Signings:

Signed C Matt Birk (source)

Cincinnati Bengals

6 of 32

Thanks to the trade that sent Carson Palmer to Oakland, the Cincinnati Bengals have two first-round picks. Coming off an AFC Wild Card berth, the Bengals have the firepower to make key upgrades to an already good roster.

First-Round Draft Order: Pick No. 17 and Pick No. 21

Top Five Team Needs

1. Running Back

Cedric Benson is not expected back at running back, opening the door for a featured back to come in.

2.  Right Guard

Bobbie Williams is not expected back in 2012, creating a starting spot in the interior offensive line.

3. Cornerback

The team is still reeling from the loss of Johnathan Joseph before the 2011 season. Finding a running mate for Leon Hall is of importance.

4. Wide Receiver

The Bengals struck gold with A.J. Green, but building a solid receiving core around him is key.

5. Safety

Reggie Nelson is currently a free agent, and Chris Crocker isn't starter material.

Franchise Player: Kicker Mike Nugent

2012 Signings:

Cleveland Browns

7 of 32

The Cleveland Browns were expected to be major players for Robert Griffin III but failed to ante up in order to make a trade for the No. 2 overall pick. Depending who you ask, quarterback is or isn't a need in Cleveland this year.

First-Round Draft Order: Pick No. 4 and Pick No. 22

Top Five Team Needs

1. Wide Receiver

No matter who the quarterback is in Cleveland next year, the Browns must find someone for him to throw to. This is the biggest need on the roster.

2. Defensive End

Rookie Jabaal Sheard played great at left end, but the Browns need to find his counterpart in a true pass rusher on the right side. Update: Signed Frostee Rucker

3. Running Back

Peyton Hillis did not receive the franchise tag, leaving many to wonder if he'll be back. Even if he is retained, the Browns could look to build depth at the position.

4. Quarterback

Colt McCoy has struggled through two offensive coordinators and a lockout in two years. If he's back as the starter, there will be pressure from fresh blood to unseat him.

5. Cornerback

Joe Haden is elite, and Sheldon Brown was solid last year, but if the Browns have a chance to upgrade, they should pull the trigger.

6. Guard

The team released Eric Steinbach in a cap-saving move. This opens up a massive need at guard.

Franchise Player: Kicker Phil Dawson

2012 Signings:

Signed DE Frostee Rucker (source)

Pittsburgh Steelers

8 of 32

The Pittsburgh Steelers took a step back in 2011 when the Baltimore Ravens won the division. Now, the pressure is on to replace aging veterans and keep their own talented players under lock-and-key.

First-Round Draft Order: Pick No. 24

Top Five Team Needs

1. Offensive Guard

The Steelers' interior line play has been regressing over the last few years. This is the year they should make a solid investment in improving the line play.

2. Inside Linebacker

Finding a suitable long-term replacement for James Farrior and someone to stuff the run next to Lawrence Timmons are key offseason needs.

3. Right Tackle

Marcus Gilbert will move to left tackle, opening the door for a new right tackle. This need could be filled as early as the first round.

4. Nose Tackle

Casey Hampton may not be back in 2012, and even if he is, the team must work to find a future replacement.

5. Running Back

Rashard Mendenhall's injury has folks in Pittsburgh concerned. Should he be slow to return, the team would need to add a quality back to take carries with Isaac Redman.

Franchise Player: None

2012 Signings:

Houston Texans

9 of 32

The Houston Texans looked like Super Bowl contenders until injury struck. Now, they will be facing the possible departure of key players Chris Myers (center) and Mario Williams (outside linebacker). How they replace them will shape their future.

First-Round Draft Order: Pick No. 26

Top Five Team Needs

1. Center - COMPLETE

If Chris Myers isn't re-signed, Houston could select a center as early as the first round to replace him. Update: Signed Chris Myers

2. Wide Receiver

Andre Johnson is a top-five receiver when healthy, but without him in 2011, the passing game suffered. Adding depth, and finding more targets for the passing game, are keys.

3. Guard

Mike Brisiel won't rate high on many free-agent lists, but he's a big part of the Houston blocking scheme. If he's not retained, guard becomes a need.

4. Nose Tackle

Shaun Cody is OK on the nose, but if a quality nose tackle falls to the Texans in the first three rounds, they shouldn't think twice about making a move.

5. Strong Safety

Finding an upgrade over Glover Quin isn't a high priority but could become a fixation of the front office.

Indianapolis Colts

10 of 32

With the first pick in the 2012 NFL draft, the Indianapolis Colts are expected to draft quarterback Andrew Luck. With one need out of the way, the Colts' new front office will be tasked with finding replacements for a laundry list of veterans shown the door.

First-Round Draft Order: Pick No. 1

Top Five Team Needs

1. Defensive Line

The Colts will move to a 3-4 defense under new coach Chuck Pagano, and they could realistically upgrade at every position along the defensive line.

2. Wide Receiver/Tight End

The Colts lost Dallas Clark, Pierre Garcon, Anthony Gonzalez and Jacob Tamme to free agency or cap cuts. Finding new targets in the passing game is huge for Luck's development. Signed WR Reggie Wayne

3. Guard

Both Mike Pollak and Joe Reitz struggled mightily in 2011. Drafting or signing guards will be a must for the Colts.

4. Center

If long-time center Jeff Saturday leaves in free agency, or retires, this becomes a priority signing.

5. Cornerback

The team will find a way to replace or upgrade over Jacob Lacey, while some believe Jerraud Powers has some ability and will be kept as a starter.

Franchise Player: None

Jacksonville Jaguars

11 of 32

The 2012 offseason in Jacksonville is about building an offense that Blaine Gabbert can succeed in. The first step will be finding quality wide receivers and building up the offensive line.

First-Round Draft Order: Pick No. 7

Top Five Team Needs

1. Wide Receiver

If you can name three receivers in Jacksonville without looking—then chances are you're from Jacksonville and a little obsessed with football.

2. Defensive End

Jeremy Mincey is a quiet, but quality starter. If he leaves via free agency, this becomes a much bigger need. Aaron Kampman is solid, but aging and could be replaced. Re-signed Jeremy Mincey.

3. Cornerback

The Jaguars resigned Rashean Mathis, but his play has slipped of late. Adding at least one cornerback would be a smart play for the Jaguars.

4. Guard/Center

Protecting Gabbert is the key in 2012, and finding better interior line play is a must.

5. Quarterback - COMPLETE

Jacksonville rolled the dice by cutting David Garrard before the 2011 season. This year, they will try to find a veteran presence who can mentor Gabbert. Update: Signed Chad Henne

Franchise Player: Kicker Josh Scobee

Tennessee Titans

12 of 32

With talk that the Tennessee Titans are interested in Peyton Manning, this could be the offseason of the unexpected in Tennessee. With quarterback not a need, will the Titans address their actual issues?

First-Round Draft Order: Pick No. 20

Top Five Team Needs

1. Defensive End

The Titans lacked an outside pass rush in 2011, and with a young roster elsewhere on defense, they need to make a sound move in improving at defensive end.

2. Guard - COMPLETE

Leroy Harris struggled to move the pile this season and could be replaced. Jake Scott is a free agent and not expected to be back. Update: Signed Steve Hutchinson

3. Center

Eugene Amano has the reputation as one of the worst centers in the NFL. This could be a second-round need for Tennessee.

4. Safety

Michael Griffin received the franchise tag, but Jordan Babineaux is a free agent opposite him. Re-signing Babineaux or drafting his replacement is needed. Update: Jordan Babineaux has been re-signed.

5. Wide Receiver

The Titans got by without Kenny Britt for most of 2011, but they need to find depth and wouldn't mind an upgrade at the position.

Cornerback

Cortland Finnegan won't be back, and the Titans aren't ready with depth behind Jason McCourty and Alterraun Verner.

Franchise Player: Safety Michael Griffin

Denver Broncos

13 of 32

Will it be Tebow Time or the Manning Hour in Denver in 2012?

John Elway and John Fox are being crafty in free agency, but they have major holes to fill if they want to return as AFC West champs.

First-Round Draft Order: Pick No. 25

Top Five Team Needs

1. Defensive Tackle

The Broncos need two defensive tackles to fill out an improved defense. John Fox loves interior defensive linemen.

2. Center

J.D. Walton was among the NFL's worst centers in 2011. Finding a bigger, stronger option should be a focus early on.

3. Running Back

Willis McGahee was a beast in 2011, notching over 500 yards after contact. That said, Denver needs a good backup to spell Willis.

4. Cornerback

Champ Bailey has been amazing, but his career is winding down. A replacement should be drafted.

5. Quarterback

There are a few scenarios here. If the Broncos sign Manning and keep Tebow, all is well. If only one of them is on the 2012 roster, Denver will need a backup.

Franchise Player: Kicker Matt Prater

2012 Signings:

Kansas City Chiefs

14 of 32

After a 2010 AFC West championship, the Kansas City Chiefs suffered at the fate of injuries to key players Jamaal Charles, Tony Moeaki, Eric Berry and Matt Cassel.

With an early draft pick in hand, and plenty of money to spend, the Chiefs look to be major players in the 2012 offseason.

First-Round Draft Order: Pick No. 11

Top Five Team Needs

1. Right Tackle

Barry Richardson's play in 2011 was far below average. The Chiefs could make finding his replacement a first-round priority.

2. Strong-side Inside Linebacker

Derrick Johnson is an All-Pro caliber inside linebacker, but next to him, the Chiefs need a big-bodied thumper who can take on blocks and stuff the run.

3. Running Back - COMPLETE

Jamaal Charles will be back from injury, but at what level of play? Finding someone to share carries is an offseason must. Signed Peyton Hillis

4. Quarterback

The Chiefs have been tied to multiple quarterbacks this offseason, making their commitment to Cassel questionable. Adding a young quarterback to challenge him, or a veteran to replace him, is possible.

5. Guard

The Chiefs hit on Jon Asamoah, but they would like to find a young guard to replace Ryan Lilja on the left side—allowing them to move Rodney Hudson to center.

Franchise Player: Wide Receiver Dwayne Bowe

Oakland Raiders

15 of 32

With just two selections in the entire draft, the Oakland Raiders are in a bit of a predicament as they try to get younger, cheaper and tougher under new head coach Dennis Allen. Releasing their best pass rusher, Kamerion Wimbley, won't make the job easier.

First-Round Draft Order: None

Top Five Team Needs

1. Cornerback

Releasing Stanford Routt opened a starting spot at cornerback. With no draft picks in the first four rounds, Oakland may look to free agency.

2. Right Tackle

Khalif Barnes is one free agent the Raiders should let leave. Finding a replacement through free agency would be ideal.

3. Center

With Samson Satele entering free agency, the Raiders will have to find a replacement for the big man in the middle.

4. Tight End

The team released Kevin Boss, opening a big window at tight end. This year's class of free-agent tight ends is deep enough for Oakland to find a replacement.

5. Outside Linebacker

Kamerion Wimbley's contract situation creates the need for Oakland to find at least one outside linebacker in this class.

Franchise Player: Safety Tyvon Branch

2012 Signings:

Signed G Mike Brisiel (source)

San Diego Chargers

16 of 32

The San Diego Chargers return the core of their talent base, but they need to upgrade after another disappointing season. Finding keys to their offensive line and replacing big free agents will make the 2012 offseason of the utmost importance to A.J. Smith.

First-Round Draft Order: Pick No. 18

Top Five Team Needs

1. Outside Linebacker - COMPLETE

The Chargers have Shaun Phillips, who is very good, and situational pass-rusher Antwan Barnes. They could use a more well-rounded outside linebacker who can stop the run and rush the quarterback. Update: Signed Jarrett Johnson

2. Left Tackle - COMPLETE

Jared Gaither played great after signing with San Diego late in the year, but he's a free agent. Marcus McNeill is likely to be cut after injuries to his neck. Update: Signed Jared Gaither

3. Cornerback

Quentin Jammer turns 33 this summer, and the team could even move him to safety. Finding at least one cornerback is a must.

4. Right Tackle

Jeromey Clary has a big salary number, but poor performance to back it up.

5. Wide Receiver - COMPLETE

Losing Vincent Jackson to free agency will create a big opening at wide receiver. San Diego could make this a first-round need. Update: Signed WR Robert Meachem, WR Eddie Royal

Franchise Player: None

Dallas Cowboys

17 of 32

The Dallas Cowboys are picked in some form or fashion to win the division (or a Super Bowl) every year. Rarely do they live up to the hype. Jerry Jones and Jason Garrett are ready to build a team, but to do so, they have to hit on their draft picks and free-agent signings.

First-Round Draft Order: Pick No. 14

Top Five Team Needs

1. Cornerback

If anything was clear in 2011, it was that Mike Jenkins and Terence Newman are not suited to play cornerback in a Rob Ryan defense. Update: Signed Brandon Carr

2. Left Guard

Kyle Kosier is a solid veteran, Bill Nagy is not a starting quality guard. This should be a priority need. Update: Signed Mackenzy Bernadeau, Nate Livings

3. Center

Phil Costa was among the worst at this job in 2011. If Dallas can find a center in the draft, they'll be glad to upgrade.

4. Tight End

Losing Martellus Bennett will hurt depth more than anything, but they need a new No. 2 tight end.

5. Safety

Abram Elam shouldn't be back as a stater, as he's a free agent. Strong safety is a priority. Update: Signed Brodney Pool

Franchise Player: Outside Linebacker Anthony Spencer

2012 Signings:

New York Giants

18 of 32

First-Round Draft Order: Pick No. 32

Top Five Team Needs

1. Guard

The team has moved around their linemen due to injuries, but finding a permanent left guard is a need.

2. Tight End

The Giants lost their top two tight ends with torn ACLs during the Super Bowl. Healthy players are needed—in a hurry. Update: Signed Martellus Bennett

3. Right Tackle

Kareem McKenzie was allowed to hit the open market after poor play during 2011. The Giants' opening-day right tackle, as of now, would be James Brewer.

4. Cornerback - COMPLETE

Both Terrell Thomas and Aaron Ross hit free agency this year—with Thomas coming off an injury-plagued season. Update: Team has signed Terrell Thomas to new deal.

5. Running Back

New York cut Brandon Jacobs in a cap-saving move. Finding Ahmad Bradshaw a complementary back is a priority.

Franchise Player: Punter Steve Weatherford

Philadelphia Eagles

19 of 32

Expectations were high in Philadelphia before the 2011 season, but the team limped to an 8-8 finish—far below the hopes for the "Dream Team."

Loaded with draft picks and with money to spare, the Eagles will look to make over a roster that underachived in 2011.

First-Round Draft Order: Pick No. 15

Top Five Team Needs

1. Middle Linebacker

Fourth-rounder Casey Matthews didn't pan out in the middle. The Eagles may try again with a first-round rookie in 2012.

2. Strong-side Linebacker

Akeem Jordan is average here, meaning if a top-tier, free-agent linebacker shows interest, Philadelphia should jump on it.

3. Safety

Nate Allen ended the season with solid play, but Jaiquawn Jarrett shouldn't see starting minutes anytime soon.

4. Center

Jason Kelce proved in over his head during the 2011 season. Finding a veteran to take his place would be ideal.

5. Defensive Tackle

Free agency could take Derek Landri and Trevor Laws, leaving the cupboard bare in 2012 in terms of depth.

Franchise Player: Wide Receiver DeSean Jackson

Washington Redskins

20 of 32

After trading four draft picks (three first-rounders and one second-round pick) to the St. Louis Rams, the Washington Redskins can sit back and draft whichever quarterback the Indianapolis Colts pass on. Once they do, they'll need to quickly sign playmakers to help the youngster develop.

First-Round Draft Order: Pick No. 2

Top Five Team Needs

1. Wide Receiver - COMPLETE

Outside of Santana Moss, the Redskins' wide receiver corps is thin on talent. A big-name, free-agent signing makes the most sense here. Update: WR Pierre Garcon has signed. WR Josh Morgan has signed.

2. Right Tackle

Without a second-round pick, Washington may have to suffer through another season of Jamaal Brown if they don't attack free agency.

3. Safety - COMPLETE

The team released OJ Atogwe and haven't moved to re-sign Laron Landry. Both safety spots could be open in 2012. Update: Signed Brandon Meriweather

4. Right Guard

The run game stuttered at times due to the lack of power blocking on the right side. Finding a mobile guard to drive open holes will only help Roy Helu and RG3.

5. Cornerback - COMPLETE

DeAngelo Hall remains solid, but Josh Wilson and Phillip Buchanon are replaceable. Depth is a concern, as well. Update: Signed Cedric Griffin

Franchise Player: Tight End Fred Davis

Chicago Bears

21 of 32

The Chicago Bears are expected to be big players in free agency—with everyone from Mario Williams to Eric Winston being mentioned as possible signings in the Windy City. The Bears have few holes to fill now that running back Matt Forte has been tagged.

First-Round Draft Order: Pick No. 19

Top Five Team Needs

1. Wide Receiver

Earl Bennett and Johnny Knox aren't exactly scaring defenses into deep coverages. A wide receiver should be a priority either early in free agency or in the first round of the draft. Update: The Bears traded two third-round picks for WR Brandon Marshall. Signed WR Eric Weems

2. Left Tackle

J'Marcus Webb may be a great person, but he's a below average left tackle. Finding a bookend blindside protector is a key move in the Bears' offseason.

3. Safety - COMPLETE

Brandon Meriweather didn't pan out and will leave as a free agent. The Bears must replace him or roll the dice with Chris Conte at free safety. Update: Signed Craig Steltz

4. Cornerback

Chicago has three cornerbacks whose contracts expired (Tim Jennings, Zack Bowman, Corey Graham). They will need to look for starters and depth. Update: Tim Jennings has been signed.

5. Outside Linebacker

Lance Briggs is constantly unhappy with his contract, and Nick Roach is replaceable on the strong side.

Detroit Lions

22 of 32

The Detroit Lions are close to competing for the division title in a packed NFC North, but to take home the crown, they have to find a way to beat the Green Bay Packers while replacing veterans on offense.

First-Round Draft Order: Pick No. 23

Top Five Team Needs

1. Left Tackle

Jeff Backus is nearing the end of his career and is also a free agent. The Lions are the favorites to re-sign him, but depth is needed in the form of an eventual replacement.

2. Center

Like Backus, center Dominic Raiola is nearing the end of his career. It's time for Detroit to find his replacement.

3. Middle Linebacker

Middle linebacker Stephen Tulloch is a free agent and should be the team's priority signing now that Cliff Avril is under the franchise tag.

4. Cornerback

Free-agent Eric Wright will determine a lot here. He's an average cornerback, but without him, this becomes the team's biggest need. Even with Wright back, corner is an area of concern when you face the Green Bay Packers twice a year.

5. Outside Linebacker

DeAndre Levy and Justin Durant didn't do bad in 2011, but the team could upgrade from them. Levy is a restricted free agent.

Franchise Player: Defensive End Cliff Avril

2012 Signings:

Green Bay Packers

23 of 32

The Green Bay Packers didn't repeat as Super Bowl champions, even after posting a 15-1 regular season record.

To take the NFC back from the New York Giants, they'll have to find a way to improve their front seven on defense while keeping their main free agents in-house.

First-Round Draft Order: Pick No. 28

Top Five Team Needs

1. Outside Linebacker

Clay Matthews has one spot locked down. Opposite him, it's a black hole. Green Bay doesn't sign free agents, so expect a draft pick to be spent here.

2. Free Safety

The future of Nick Collins is in question after a neck injury in 2011. If he's back, the team needs depth. If he's not, it's time to find a starter.

3. Running Back

Ryan Grant will test the open market, with James Starks and 2011 draftee Alex Green in place to take over. A featured back could tempt Green Bay if someone falls in the first two rounds.

4. Defensive End

B.J. Raji and co. didn't play up to their 2010 levels, leaving gaping holes for offenses to run through and failing to generate a pass rush. Raji will move to nose permanently, leaving Jarius Wynn and Ryan Pickett on the edges with an upgrade needed.

5. Quarterback

Aaron Rodgers is obviously pretty good, but losing Matt Flynn opens the door for the No. 2 job. Graham Harrell assumes the spot as of now.

Minnesota Vikings

24 of 32

The Minnesota Vikings are in perfect position to draft the player they should have No. 1 on the board—USC's Matt Kalil.

Left tackle is a big need, but the Vikings have many holes on a roster loaded with free agents and young players on the brink.

First-Round Draft Order: Pick No. 3

Top Five Team Needs

1. Left Tackle

Drafting Matt Kalil will take care of this need. This should be a slam-dunk pick.

2. Cornerback

Cedric Griffin's release puts Minnesota in position to potentially grab Morris Claiborne with the No. 3 overall pick. If not, cornerback will be a need in free agency and the draft.

3. Guard

The release of Steve Hutchinson and Anthony Herrera—both starting guards in 2011—opens the door for the Vikings to find two new starters.

4. Wide Receiver

Percy Harvin is incredibly talented, but the team lacks weapons to draw coverage off him. Look for an upgrade in the middle of the draft.

5. Linebacker

Both E.J. and Erin Henderson are free agents this year, with neither having been approached about signing new deals. If either/both leave, Minnesota has big problems.

Atlanta Falcons

25 of 32

The Atlanta Falcons are in a prime position to take back the NFC South in a year when the New Orleans Saints are expected to be hit hard by free agency.

Without a first-round draft choice, the Falcons must hit on every signing this offseason.

First-Round Draft Order: None

Top Five Team Needs

1. Left Tackle

I happen to be a fan of Will Svitek, but the Atlanta Falcons don't seem to be. Left tackle could be a marquee signing in free agency or their first draft pick.

2. Right Guard

When Harvey Dahl left for St. Louis, the right side of the Falcons' line took a big hit. They'd love to find a replacement. Fast.

3. Defensive End

If John Abraham is re-signed this isn't a major need, but if he's not expect to hear Atlanta linked to many top free agents at the position. Update: Signed John Abraham

4. Wide Receiver - COMPLETE

Roddy White and Julio Jones make a nice team, but slot receiver Harry Douglas is a free agent, and the team is still looking for a reliable third target at wide out. Update: Signed WR Harry Douglas.

5. Tight End

Tony Gonzalez re-signed, but the team needs to identify a young player to take over in 2013.

Franchise Player: Cornerback Brent Grimes

Carolina Panthers

26 of 32

No one expected Cam Newton's first season to be as great as it was—and boy was it great.

Newton set rookie touchdown records on his way to an Offensive Rookie of the Year award. Now the pressure is on to take those first-season accolades and turn them into wins.

First-Round Draft Order: Pick No. 8

Top Five Team Needs

1. Defensive Tackle

After spending two third-round picks on defensive tackles last year, the Panthers still need help. This should be their first-round focus.

2. Wide Receiver

Steve Smith enjoyed an amazing year, and Brandon LaFell and David Gettis offer nice depth, but the team lacks a true No. 2 receiver.

3. Safety

Sherrod Martin and Charles Godfrey are middle-of-the-road players. The Panthers could easily upgrade over either, or both. Update: Signed Haruki Nakamura

4. Guard

Geoff Schwartz is a good player, but also a free agent. Travelle Wharton is under contract, but not a very good player.

5. Outside Linebacker

Thomas Davis hasn't been able to stay healthy, while James Anderson is very much average. An upgrade would be great, but depth is a must.

New Orleans Saints

27 of 32

Without a first-round pick, and with many notable free agents of their own, the New Orleans Saints will focus on keeping as many of their own players as possible.

With "Bountygate" hovering, the Saints need a good news offseason.

First-Round Draft Order: None

Top Five Team Needs

1. Outside Linebacker

Speed is needed as the Saints look to replace Scott Shanle and Jo-Lonn Dunbar this offseason.

2. Defensive Tackle

The moves to sign Shaun Rogers and Aubrayo Franklin backfired, and now, the Saints are looking for two defensive tackles in an offseason with little money and no first-round draft pick.

3. Wide Receiver

Both Marques Colston and Robert Meachem, the team's top two wideouts, are free agents. If big money is paid to Brees and Nicks, there will be little left to go around. Update: Saints have signed Marques Colston.

4. Quarterback

Drew Brees was tagged as the franchise player, but reports indicate he has no plans to sign the tag. This could get ugly. In the meantime, the Saints need a better Plan B than Chase Daniel.

5. Guard - COMPLETE

Carl Nicks wasn't re-signed and will enter free agency as one of the best players on the open market. If he leaves, the Saints have a gigantic hole to replace. Update: Signed Ben Grubbs

Franchise Player: Quarterback Drew Brees

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

28 of 32

The 2011 season was a disappointing one in Tampa, as the team lost 10 straight games before head coach Raheem Morris was fired.

In comes Greg Schiano, who promises to run a no-nonsense lockerroom reminiscent of Tom Coughlin's early days in New York.

Tampa fans can hope for similar results.

First-Round Draft Order: No. 5

Top Five Team Needs

1. Outside Linebacker

Quincy Black shouldn't have been signed to a big deal last year. The team needs better play from Black's position and could move to find a replacement for free-agent Geno Hayes.

2. Cornerback

Ronde Barber's play has declined significantly, and he may retire. Aqib Talib faces an offseason trial on gun charges. Cornerback is a big need. Update: Signed CB Eric Wright

3. Wide Receiver

Mike Williams and Arrelious Benn are solid players, but the team lacks a deep threat with real speed. If the opportunity presents itself, Tampa would love to find a big-play wideout. Update: WR Vincent Jackson signed.

4. Running Back

LeGarrette Blount is a restricted free agent, and while he's likely to be tendered, the team needs a quality backup to split time with Blount.

5. Guard/Center - COMPLETE

Tampa re-signed Jeremy Zuttah, but Davin Joseph remains one of the most overrated players in the NFL. Jeff Faine's release opens the door for a new center to come in. Update: Signed G Carl Nicks

Franchise Player: Kicker Connor Barth

Arizona Cardinals

29 of 32

The trade to bring Kevin Kolb to Arizona didn't pan out as expected, and the team will now look to rebuild the offense after courting Peyton Manning and releasing (and then re-signing) Levi Brown.

First-Round Draft Order: No. 13 Overall

Top Five Team Needs

1. Left Tackle

Even before Levi Brown was cut, this was a need. Brown's play never lived up to his pay, and now, Arizona is in place to draft or sign a top-flight left tackle. Update: Re-signed Levi Brown.

2. Inside Linebacker

The signing of Stewart Bradley looks pretty bad in hindsight. The Cardinals need a better athlete to patrol the middle of the field in their hybrid defense. Adding two new inside linebackers isn't out of the question.

3. Right Tackle

If the left tackle position was bad, right tackle is even worse. Brandon Keith is also a free agent, making this a priority position to upgrade at.

4. Wide Receiver

Larry Fitzgerald is great. Andre Roberts is solid. Early Doucet is not. The Cardinals need to find a real No. 2 wide receiver who can pull defenses off Fitzgerald.

5. Outside Linebacker

Sam Acho has one outside spot locked down. O'Brien Schofield looks promising on the other, but an upgrade could be had.

Franchise Player: Defensive End Calais Campbell

San Francisco 49ers

30 of 32

Signing Randy Moss and Ahmad Brooks was a great way to start the offseason in San Francisco. But now the team must focus on re-signing their own (Alex Smith, Carlos Rogers) and filling in holes on an offense that held the team back at times.

First-Round Draft Order: Pick No. 30

Top Five Team Needs

1. Wide Receiver

The signing of Randy Moss certainly could help, but I remain cynical of how much he can contribute. Re-signing Josh Morgan would be a huge step in crossing this need off the list.

2. Cornerback - COMPLETE

Re-signing Carlos Rogers would fix this problem, as the 49ers are set with Tarell Brown and Chris Culliver opposite Rogers. Update: 49ers have signed Carlos Rogers and Perrish Cox.

3. Right Guard

Adam Snyder and Chilo Rachal are both serviceable backups, but neither should be starting. This could be a first-round need if a top player falls.

4. Nose Tackle

The weak link on a damn good defense, the 49ers have good depth here, but no dominant players.

5. Quarterback

Alex Smith is expected to re-sign, but until he does, this is a considerable need. Colin Kaepernick is, by all accounts, not quite ready to take over the starting job.

Franchise Player: Safety Dashon Goldson

Seattle Seahawks

31 of 32

The Seattle Seahawks made a surprise playoff run in 2010 before taking a small step back in 2011. What's encouraging is that Pete Carroll has assembled a murder's row on defense and a very solid wide receiver corps. Now to find his quarterback and shore up the defensive line.

First-Round Draft Order: Pick No. 12

Top Five Team Needs

1. Quarterback

Tarvaris Jackson improved in 2011, so it isn't out of the question that he could start again in 2012. Seattle will continue to be very patience, and very picky, in finding their franchise quarterback.

2. Guard

Robert Gallery

3. Defensive End - COMPLETE

Red Bryant is a free agent, and his presence on the right side would be missed. On the left side, Chris Clemons could use a good backup who can spell him on third downs. Update: Re-signed DE Red Bryant.

4. Middle/Strongside Linebacker

Leroy Hill, David Hawthorne and David Vobora are free agents. Seattle could be a surprise candidate to draft a linebacker early in the first round.

5. Running Back

Re-signing Marshawn Lynch was a must, but the team must now find depth in case Lynch goes down or needs a break with his punishing style of play.

Franchise Player: None

St. Louis Rams

32 of 32

Thanks to a trade that gives St. Louis three extra picks over the next three drafts—including an extra first-rounder in 2013 and 2014—the Rams are in prime position to rebuild the roster in the image of Les Snead and Jeff Fisher. St. Louis will be among the most active teams this offseason.

First-Round Draft Order: Pick No. 6

Top Five Team Needs

1. Defensive Tackle

Fred Robbins and Justin Bannan are quality wave players, but neither is worthy of a starting job—nor do they fit Jeff Fisher's attacking 4-3 defensive scheme. The Rams are a favorite to draft a defensive tackle at No. 6 overall. Update: Signed Kendall Langford

2. Wide Receiver

If the Rams can keep Brandon Lloyd, it would definitely help, but Lloyd is not a factor after the catch, and that's what the team needs with Sam Bradford's timing and accuracy.

3. Cornerback

Ron Bartell was released Monday, opening the door for two new starters at cornerback in 2012. Update: Signed Cortland Finnegan

4. Right Tackle

Jason Smith hasn't lived up to the hype of being the No. 2 overall pick. The Rams may give him one more year to prove his worth, but depth is a need either way.

5. Running Back

Steven Jackson has had a great career, but he needs someone to share carries with. As of now, Jackson is the only signed running back on the roster.

Franchise Player: None
