England vs. Holland: Stuart Pearce Fails to Prove He's Man for Job in Loss

Timothy RappFeb 29, 2012

Sure, it's hard to fully judge England's caretaker manager, Stuart Pearce, after his first friendly.

And sure, we all know he's unlikely to stick around as the manager anyhow, what with Harry Redknapp expected to be given the position.

But Pearce certainly didn't help his cause with an odd and emotionally exhausting 3-2 loss against Holland, even if he would like to stick with the team. According to Alex Chick of Yahoo!:

"

"I've offered my services in the summer," he said.

"I've really enjoyed the last few days, it's been fantastic and the players have been outstanding. Their focus and contribution in training has been very good. I enjoyed tonight."

Things were looking bleak in Pearce's first outing an hour in, as Holland led 2-0. But England came roaring back late in the contest, evening the score at two apiece and suddenly transforming Pearce into a viable candidate for the job in the eyes of English fans, I'm sure.

And then Holland scored the winning goal in stoppage time, shocking the English side and ruining Pearce's debut.

The loss may not be the only reason some look at Pearce as the wrong man for the job, after he surprised many by naming Scott Parker captain and not Steven Gerrard.

And honestly, is he crazy for wanting the position in the first place with all of the drama that seems to constantly surround the English national team?

Pearce probably didn't lose a chance to take over the position full time after just one game—he may be out of the question—but he and the English side certainly didn't seize the opportunity, either.

In other words, let the drama continue.
