NFL Trade Rumors: 5 Teams That Need the Rams' No. 2 Pick in 2012 NFL Draft
ESPN is reporting that the St. Louis Rams are set to trade their No. 2 pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, which will undoubtedly result in a team drafting Heisman winner Robert Griffin III.
It's not shocking that the Rams are looking to move the No. 2 pick because they are set at the quarterback position with Sam Bradford, the 2010 Rookie of the Year.
The Rams are obviously hoping that RG3 has a ridiculous pro day and workout, so that the value of their No. 2 pick skyrockets.
More important than the value of the pick, however, is the debate over which teams will be interested in moving up to the Rams' No. 2 spot.
So, which NFL teams should be interested in the Rams' No. 2 overall draft pick, that ultimately boils down to trading for Robert Griffin III? Read on to find out.
Washington Redskins
1 of 5There's one team that without question should be interested in moving up in hopes of being able to snag Heisman quarterback Robert Griffin III—and that team is the Washington Redskins.
The Redskins didn't have that great of a 2011 NFL season, ending the year with an underwhelming 5-11 overall record, and an even worse 2-4 record against the NFC East. One of the major reasons why the Redskins struggled so much in 2011 was because of the inconsistent play at the quarterback position.
Rex Grossman wasn't terrible—throwing for over 3,000 yards and 16 touchdowns—but he's certainly not the answer in the Nation's Capital at the quarterback position. If the Redskins want any hope heading into the 2012 NFL season, they need to find their future franchise quarterback, and that guy is none other than Robert Griffin III.
The Redskins could offer the Rams their No. 6 pick, plus a second round draft pick and John Beck, in return for the No. 2 slot—and that would be the best move the Redskins have made in the past decade.
Cleveland Browns
2 of 5Move over Colt McCoy—it's time for Robert Griffin III to take over the city of Cleveland.
While McCoy hasn't been terrible—he threw for 2,733 yards and 14 touchdowns last year—he certainly hasn't helped the Browns become a legitimate contender in the AFC North. RGIII, however, can help make the Browns relevant again in the AFC North.
The Browns desperately need some excitement injected into their franchise, and that's what drafting Robert Griffin III would help the Browns do. Trading the Rams for the No. 2 pick in the draft would be a smart move for the Cleveland Browns to make, because they wouldn't have to give up as much as a lot of other teams—as they're the proud owners of the No. 4 pick.
The Browns could feasibly get the Rams' No. 2 draft pick by trading away their No. 4 overall pick and their second round draft pick, which wouldn't be asking too much for the Browns to give up. Even if the Browns have to give up their first five draft picks to get RG3, they absolutely should.
Arizona Cardinals
3 of 5Here's a wildcard—the Arizona Cardinals being interested in trading with the St. Louis Rams for the No. 2 overall pick.
Let's be honest: the Kevin Kolb experiment did not work out last year. While Cardinals' fans will say one year isn't enough time to conclude whether Kolb is the future for the Cardinals, I think it's safe to say that Robert Griffin III would be a more exciting prospect moving forward.
What makes a potential Cardinals' trade with the St. Louis Rams so interesting is that the Cardinals could feasibly include Kevin Kolb in their trade package for that No. 2 overall pick. In all honesty, the Cardinals are better off going with quarterback John Skelton—who went 6-2 in his eight starts last season—instead of relying on Kevin Kolb.
The Cardinals could realistically trade the Rams their 13th overall pick, plus Kevin Kolb and a fifth/sixth round draft pick, for the Rams' No. 2 overall pick. If the Cardinals made that move, they could start the 2012 season with Skelton, while building the future of their franchise around RGIII.
I know this isn't likely to happen, but it's something that the Cardinals should seriously consider.
Seattle Seahawks
4 of 5The Seattle Seahawks don't have much to offer the St. Louis Rams besides draft picks, but they should still make a serious attempt to get Robert Griffin III.
The Seahawks aren't going anywhere special anytime soon with Tarvaris Jackson and Charlie Whitehurst. While the stats suggest Jackson wasn't horrible last season—throwing for 3,091 yards and 14 touchdowns—he certainly didn't prove that he can carry an NFL franchise.
The future of the Seahawks franchise lies in their ability to re-sign Pro Bowl running back Marshawn Lynch, If they can do that and RGIII, the future of the Seahawks will be very bright.
Realistically, Seattle would have to offer the Rams at least their first (12th overall), second and fourth round draft picks to have a legitimate chance at the No. 2 overall pick. Giving all of that up wouldn't be a bad move for the Seahawks to make, especially if they can lock in Lynch long-term.
With one of the best defenses in the entire NFL—ranking ninth in yards allowed per game—the Seahawks would be in good hands if they could make a legitimate move in the Robert Griffin III sweepstakes.
Dallas Cowboys
5 of 5I know the Dallas Cowboys have Tony Romo at the helm, and owner Jerry Jones is more than happy with him, but Tony Romo hasn't been the staple of health and consistency that the Cowboys need.
I'm not saying that the Cowboys need to move forward by trading Tony Romo, as that would be just ridiculous, but the Cowboys definitely need a back-up plan for when they realize that Romo isn't the guy to bring titles back to the city of Dallas.
Romo's inconsistent play has haunted the Cowboys ever year since he's been the starter, and trying to get their hands on Robert Griffin III would be a solid way for America's team to build for the future, while still staying relevant in the present.
The Cowboys could feasibly trade away their 14th overall pick, second round pick and third round pick for the Rams' No. 2 overall pick and maybe the Rams' fourth or fifth round pick as well, which wouldn't be such a bad move for the Cowboys to make.
The RG3 sweepstakes will undoubtedly come down to the Browns and the Redskins, but with wildcards like the Cowboys, Cardinals and Seahawks, things could get very interesting as we move closer to the 2012 NFL Draft.
