Bayer Leverkusen vs. Barcelona: Catalans Leave Leverkusen Hopeless

Bayer Leverkusen's chances to advance in the Champions League now rest between slim and none after being destroyed by Barcelona in Germany, 3-1. 

Things got Messi as the Barcelona star lit up the night with a goal and assist to Alexis Sanchez in the first half with a pass that was pure gold. 

The remarkable joy for Barca supporters is the three goals that came away in the first leg of the Round of 16 at BayArena. 

The clash continues at the Camp Nou on March 7th, and there is little thought that the German side can manage what is an impossible task. 

This was a classic drubbing in which Barcelona held possession in the match an awe-inspiring 75 percent of the time. That is an astonishing ratio that serves to prove Barcelona is settling in quite nicely for a run at another Champions League title. 

It takes more than talent at this time of year as poise and confidence can be just as valuable. Barca created space and had the opportunity to get quite creative en route to 11 shots and five on goal. 

The least-heralded player of the game has to be Victor Valdes, who was tasked with staying on a Bayer Leverkusen who made the most of their limited time with the ball. 

His three saves went a long way to stifling any hope that may have mounted for the German side. This kind of hopeless sentiment carries over to the second leg as Barcelona should be far more comfortable in their own confines. 

The key for manager Pep Guardiola has to be to find Lionel Messi some rest in the coming weeks. He was not less as effective on the pitch Tuesday night, but he certainly showed some signs of sluggish efforts. 

The pace of Barcelona still proved far too much for the Bayer Leverkusen back line to contend with. There is reason to think it would be much better in a couple of weeks. 

Barca has bought themselves a bit of a cushion in the all-important tournament. That is all they need to continue to play like the all-out favorites they are.
