World Football: Top 5 Quotes of the Week
So did anything happen this week?
Just kidding. But seriously, what can you say that hasn't already been said about the last few days? The transfer window closed, Beckham got naked, Messi missed a penalty and Arsenal fans nearly killed Arsene Wenger.
OK, so one of those things didn't happen. But, hey, smart guy—which one was it?
In honor of this crazy week, we've selected five quotes that we'd present to curious Martians if they showed up on our doorstep this afternoon looking for answers.
We hope you enjoy.
Beckham on Nudity
1 of 5MLS footballer/male model David Beckham unveiled a line of underpants Wednesday. At the press conference, he detailed his children's reaction to the line's provocative ad campaign.
"'Oh my GOD Daddy—not again," they said. "They were like: 'that's really good, but everyone's gonna see you in your pants."
And… it got better. “I walk around in my pants now,” he said. “With the boys walking around naked wasn't a problem because they are naked all the time. But now I have a girl it’s different."
Yeah, so it wasn't creepy before. Ho-kay.
'Arry Waxes Nostalgic
2 of 5Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp, wearing some smart-looking Jonathan Franzen glasses while standing trial for tax evasion, revealed in court on Thursday why he named his Monaco-based bank account "Rosie."
"When asked whether he chose the name himself after flying out to the tax haven in 2002, Redknapp said: Of course I chose the name, Rosie's my dog. I loved her to bits."When you ring up you have to give a name—I thought I had to have a name there, Rosie was my dog."
"
No wonder American judges often ban the media from the courtroom.
Arsenal Disappoint Fans, Again
3 of 5Once again, Arsenal disappointed their fans by doing next to nothing in the transfer window. The Gunners bought 19-year-old midfielder Thomas Eisfeld from Borussia Dortmund—and promptly sent him to the reserves.
That was it, besides a short-term loan deal for a past-due-date Thierry Henry.
Take heart, though, Gooners. Here's what your chief executive thinks about the whole situation.
""It (our model) does mean we can't afford to compete with oil money, and we can't afford to compete with super-wealthy individuals from Russia," he told Fox.
"But I think the more important thing about our model is that it's sustainable.
"If we've learned anything from the world's economic crisis, it has to be that football clubs need to have responsibility - not just for today, but for their own futures.
"And our business model means that we can continue to do what we're doing forever.
"Our focus is always on young players, we've got a fantastic development system and still there are young players coming through consistently from our youth ranks and that'll continue to be the way Arsenal do things."
"
Step off the ledge, Gooners. It's gonna be OK. Maybe.
Ferguson on Morrison
4 of 5Manchester United sold troubled youngster Ravel Morrison to West Ham United on deadline day. The move was prompted partially because Morrison, 18, has been in and out of trouble with the law.
On the transfer, United manager Sir Alex Ferguson said:
""In the case of Ravel it's been quite well documented," said Ferguson. "I think he's better out of Manchester.
"He's got a great talent but it's how to deal with it that is important."
"
Alves Stops Messi
5 of 5On Wednesday, the unthinkable happened. Barcelona's Lionel Messi missed a penalty.
Actually, he didn't miss it. Valencia keeper Diego Alves saved Messi's on-target penalty in a 1-1 draw in the Copa Del Rey semifinals. Afterwards Alves said:
""He [Messi] is a player who doesn't give you much of a clue about which way he is going to shoot," Alves said afterwards. "You just have to hang in there and try to deceive him and today I was happy to be able to help the team."
