National Signing Day 2012: Ranking the Top Offensive Recruiting Classes
With National Signing Day fully underway, many pieces to the puzzle are beginning to be put in place. Many top prospects have made their commitments, and we are getting closer to seeing just how these teams are shaping up for the future.
We've already looked at the recruiting classes that will have an instant impact, and now it's time to see which recruiting classes are the best offensively. These classes have several of the top players in this recruiting class on the offensive side of the ball.
Some of the players may contribute right away, while others may take a bit longer to learn the ropes. Regardless, these are a few teams that hit the jackpot on offense.
Oregon
1 of 5You know we couldn't talk about offense without mentioning the Oregon Ducks. This is a team that's already loaded on that side of the ball, but Chip Kelly always seems to find more talented players that want to play in his system.
They landed arguably the most talented offensive tackle in Arik Armstead, who has the ability to play right away at 6'8", 275 pounds. He has great explosion off the football and has a motor that just doesn't seem to quit. He could really become one of the best offensive linemen sooner rather than later.
Anytime you're able to get one tight end that's 6'6" with great hands, you did your job at that position. Well, the Ducks were able to land two with the additions of Evan Baylis and Pharaoh Brown.
And of course it wouldn't be Oregon if it didn't add a speedy wide receiver, and this year, that pickup is Bralon Addison, who is a home run hitter and also has the ability to play the quarterback position.
Other notable players include: RB Byron Marshall, QB Jake Rodrigues and OT Kyle Long
Oklahoma
2 of 5Along with Purdue and Air Force, the Oklahoma Sooners have the most offensive players committed with a total of 17. Unlike those other two schools, a lot of those players are at the top of their class and look to make an immediate impact.
Oklahoma added a total of four 4-star wide receivers that include Durron Neal, Courtney Gardner, Sterling Shepard and Trey Metoyer. All of them are great after the catch, have great hands and, with two of them being at least 6'2", they provide big targets.
The Sooners also added some offensive line depth with the additions of John McGee, who plays the tackle position, but is versatile enough to play guard as well. Adding Ty Darlington at center is a big pickup as well for the Sooners.
Other notable players include OG Kyle Marrs, QB Trevor Knight and RB David Smith
Florida
3 of 5Florida didn't exactly have great offensive production last season, and that was even with offensive guru Charlie Weis at offensive coordinator. Now with Brent Peace calling the shots, they look to be more productive next season.
The Gators added one of the top offensive tackles in D.J. Humpries. He's a great run and pass blocker already and was absolutely dominant at the high school level. Although what stands out on the offensive side of the ball is the fact they landed two of this year's top tight ends in Kent Taylor and Colin Thompson. Both have great hands and are great at picking up yards after the catch.
The quarterback position may still be a bit shaky, but Florida is putting the pieces together to get back on track in the SEC.
Other notable players include WR Latroy Pittman and RB Matt Jones
Alabama
4 of 5Alabama is more known for its defense than its offense, but they didn't do too shabby in picking up a few gems. Starting with running back T.J. Yeldon at running back, who is a big body at 6'1", 215 pounds and has great field vision and above average speed. He should help contribute right away and be a solid contributor along with Eddie Lacy.
Adding wide receiver Cyrus Jones will also be good for this offense and help quarterback AJ McCarron mature. He's great after the catch and with his solid speed, he becomes an instant down field threat and a big play waiting to happen. Wide receiver Amari Cooper is another great pickup, as he's another big target and red zone threat at 6'2", 180 pounds.
Other notable players include RB Kenyan Drake, OT Brandon Greene and WR Chris Black
Texas
5 of 5Texas has quite a few weapons on offense returning, including running back Malcolm Brown, who rushed for over 1,000 yards, and a majority of their wide receivers. This recruiting class includes another running back in Jonathan Gray, who has great acceleration and superb field vision.
The Longhorns also picked up two quality offensive linemen in Curtis Riser and Kennedy Estelle. Both are big bodies at 6'5" and 6'7" and have great blocking skills. Another key piece in this recruiting class is wide receiver Cayleb Jones who is a strong wideout and has a great combination of strength and size at 6'2", 185 pounds.
Other notable players include WR Marcus Johnson, QB Connor Brewer and OT Camrhon Hughes
