Thomas Johnson to Texas A&M over Oregon: Was It the Right Decision?

Ian HanfordJun 2, 2018

The Texas A&M Aggies made a splash on National Signing Day when 4-star wide receiver Thomas Johnson announced his commitment to the school.

Sweetening the deal is Johnson's former commitment to in-state rival Texas.

After decommitting from Texas last month, Johnson chose the Aggies over Oregon at the last second.

The Aggies are happy with Johnson's choice, and Johnson should be as well. He enters a great situation with a chance to grab plenty of attention from Week 1.

Johnson is not a big receiver, but he has a strong, wiry frame. He has great burst off the line and runs crisp routes.

His ability to run after the catch and create his own space is what could set Johnson apart on the Aggie offense.

Johnson's size suggest he will play on the inside in college, but his speed and ability to beat his man off the line of scrimmage could entrench him firmly as a No. 1 or No. 2 option on the outside.

The Aggies will have a new quarterback under center with Ryan Tannehill taking his talents to the NFL next season. Whoever winds up taking over the signal-calling reins will need weapons, especially in new head coach Kevin Sumlin's high-octane attack.

Uzoma Nwachukwu and Ryan Swope both return to the Aggie receiving corps, but neither possess the playmaking ability of Johnson.

The addition of Johnson will allow Swope to move underneath and utilize his great hands in a possession role.

Sumlin's attack is reason enough for any receiver to head to College Station next season, especially compared to Oregon's spread attack.

The Ducks are not a dynamic passing team. Instead, they rely on their ground game to carve yardage out of opposing defenses.

That will be the case even more so next season with Darron Thomas making a surprise jump to the NFL. Fans can expect the Ducks to lean heavily on Kenjon Barner and De'Anthony Thomas without making many vertical throws.

If Johnson wants to be a weapon, the Ducks may have been the right choice. However, if he wants to become a true receiver, he will fit nicely in Sumlin's aerial assault with the Aggies.

He will get a chance to shine early and will have many balls thrown his way, right away.
