National Signing Day 2012: The Kentucky Wildcats & 2 Other Teams with No Chance

Ryan RudnanskyJun 2, 2018

There are those teams that land multiple Top-100 players on National Signing Day, and then there are those teams that don't land a single one.

This piece is dedicated to the squads that will head into the 2012 season already wondering where it all went wrong.

Congratulations, Kentucky football, you made a list.

3. Kentucky (2011 Record: 5-7)

Not only did Kentucky go 5-7 last season, they didn't pick up any Top-150 recruits, according to ESPNU.

Additionally, their five wins last season were against these teams: Western Kentucky, Central Michigan, Jacksonville State, Ole Miss and Tennessee.

The Wildcats averaged 15.8 points per game last season, good for 117th in the FBS. I don't see that changing much.

2. Washington State (2011 Record: 4-8)

Washington State finished in last place in the Pac-12 North last season, with a 2-7 conference record. They responded by nabbing only two four-star recruits and seven three-star recruits (none in the Top 150).

The Cougars had a nice win against free-falling Arizona State last season, but that was about as impressive as it got.

They needed a big recruiting season and it's not looking good for them headed into National Signing Day.

1. Maryland (2011 Record: 2-10)

As bad as Maryland's uniforms looked to start last season, they actually looked decent under new head coach Randy Edsall against the Miami Hurricanes.

Then they plummeted. Maryland had one win the rest of the season, giving up 34.3 points per game to close out the year.

Maryland has landed two four-star recruits and 12 three-star recruits, but that's not going to be enough to get them over the hump.

I had so much hope for the Terrapins under Edsall—who had a terrific season with Connecticut in 2010—but it's not looking good right now.
