Ohio State Football Recruiting: Urban Meyer's Class Takes Spotlight off Michigan

Ryan RudnanskyJan 27, 2012

With all this Urban Meyer hoopla, everyone seems to be forgetting about Ohio State's longtime rivals, the Michigan Wolverines.

After all, Michigan did go 11-2 and win the Sugar Bowl last season.

But, more importantly, while Meyer's recruiting class has been blessed this offseason, Michigan has actually done pretty darn well itself. In fact, according to ESPNU, Michigan has had the better recruiting class overall (No. 7 compared to Ohio State's No. 8).

It is true that Ohio State has a 5-Star recruit in defensive end Noah Spence, who looks like he's going to be a spectacular pass-rusher down the line.

But Michigan has landed 11 4-Star recruits and 10 3-Star recruits, including cornerback Terry Richardson, the No. 5 cornerback in the class according to ESPNU.

Michigan is coming off a great season and apparently is set up to be even better as the 2012 class matures. The Wolverines also still have quarterback Denard Robinson, who's been an undeniable force in college.

Yet, everybody is talking about Meyer.

It's no wonder why. Meyer is a big name who guided Florida to two national championships. It's also impressive what he's done this offseason given Ohio State's NCAA sanctions.

But don't forget who won "The Game" last season. It wasn't Ohio State, it was Michigan. In fact, Michigan scored 40 points on Nov. 26 in Ann Arbor, the most against the Buckeyes since 1946. Michigan is still the better team and I find it curious why Ohio State is garnering so much more attention in the Big Ten.

What Meyer has done has been impressive, but let's not forget who was No. 13 in the country last season amid Meyer Mania.
