Chelsea FC: The Blues Could Use a Portuguese Playmaker.

Jesse PJun 5, 2018

It's not unknown that Chelsea desperately need a midfield play maker. Mata is the closest thing we have, but AVB seems to keep him out on the left.

This made me think back to when I first started following English football and, seemingly, Chelsea FC.

I was highly interested in the midfield play maker, Deco. He livened up the game every time he was on the pitch. His touch was superb, vision was extraordinary and shot placement was one of a kind. That kind of Portuguese influence in a deep squad is what lead Chelsea to the title. Ballack, Lampard, Essien, Mikel and Deco were all fighting for a starting place in midfield.

Nowadays, AVB has less depth or at least less "talented" and experienced depth. Essien is back which is a huge plus, but I believe an other midfield playmaker would surely wrap things up, particularly a Portuguese one.

Joao Moutinho

As we all know, Joao Moutinho is an incredible midfielder and playmaker who has had great success at Porto. AVB knows him very well as he depended on him to influence the play during his very successful season as manager at Porto.

He has been linked to Chelsea many times before, but this summer could be the best time to acquire such a talent who could add so much to the team and grow himself.

Joao, along side his Portuguese international teammate Raul Meireles, could easily adapt to the EPL and fit right along in midfield on the left side to proved the through balls that the forwards are so desperately wanting.

André Castro

Some of you are probably thinking, "who is this André Castro?" He is a youngster who has yet to break into the first-team at FC Porto.

He would be available at a bargain price and with so much room for growth at such a young age—and the talent that he already possesses—he could have a huge impact at Chelsea as well as providing some midfield depth.

André Bernardes Santos

More commonly known as André Santos, here is another up and coming Portuguese midfielder who plays for Sporting Lisbon. He is beginning to break into the first team at Sporting and excelling.

Having already made his first international cap, he is on his way to stardom. I'm unsure about his availability since he is beginning to show his true potential, but he is still worth the value to help strength the Chelsea midfield and develop into a playmaker.

Conclusion

Andre Villas Boas understands the Portuguese player and game in an extraordinary way and he seemingly knows how to get the best out of his players. Adding a midfield playmaker who is also Portuguese is such a huge boost to the Chelsea team and would provide depth in the midfield area.

There are many other possible midfield play-makers who could add something incredible—most have already been linked with a move to Chelsea—but with AVB finding his feet and establishing his career at Chelsea, there will be many changes ahead.
