Ricky Rubio vs. Kyrie Irving: Who Will Be Better in 5 Seasons?

Matt ShetlerMay 31, 2018

This season's rookie class isn't a particularly strong one.

But one thing it has is a pair of spectacular rookie point guards in the Cleveland Cavaliers' Kyrie Irving and the Minnesota Timberwolves' Ricky Rubio.

Both are off to outstanding starts to their careers, and both have bright futures ahead of them, but which guy will be better five years from now?

Truthfully, you can't go wrong with either guy, but having to choose one, I will go with Rubio.

That's no knock on Irving at all, who's off to a great start. His 17.7 points and 5.2 assists per night attest to the caliber of player he can be.

He's shown that he's a scorer, exceeding the 20-point mark in four straight games, before scoring 18 in Cleveland's loss to Golden State.

Irving has great court vision, the physical tools to get to the rim, the range to keep defenses honest.

Rubio, on the other hand, could be the better all-floor general now and down the road.

His passing alone is jaw-dropping.

He's big and fast, and his game is fluid. He just has the knack for finding the open man, both in the half-court set and in transition.

I'd also give him the overall edge as a defensive guard.

But while Irving is the better shooter, Rubio's scoring has been somewhat surprising. He came in with the reputation as a poor shooter and even worse finisher, but that's not entirely the case.

Rubio can score it when he has to, and if that scoring keeps coming along, he's going to be  a consistent double-double throughout his career.

Irving will be a very good facilitator and quarterback of the Cavs offense.

Rubio will be great at those same things.
