NHL Trade Speculation: Which Big Names Won't Be Moving?

Josh MartinJun 7, 2018

The 2012 NHL trade deadline is still a month-and-a-half away, though that's hardly kept GMs around the league from kicking each other's tires in search of quality players to acquire in pursuit of the Stanley Cup.

There's no shortage of big names spinning through hockey's rumor mill these days. Just don't expect any of these three highly-regarded veterans to find new homes this season.

Jarome Iginla

It would stand to reason that the Calgary Flames would be willing to part with long-time franchise cornerstone Jarome Iginla. The team currently sits 11th in the Western Conference standings, is in dire need of a full-scale rebuild and owes it to Iginla to find him a place on a Stanley Cup contender before his playing days are through.

Of course, things are much more complicated than that in Calgary. Iginla has reiterated, time and again, that he wants to win a Cup with the Flames, presumably even if it means playing through another youth movement.

As for the Flames, they're well aware that they'd hardly be able to bring back much of a bounty in exchange for the 34-year-old winger.

With that being the case, they'd be much more inclined to keep Iginla around as long as he wants to be there to maximize his value and keep the home fans happy. What's more, the return of Michael Cammalleri suggests the Flames aren't ready to give up on the 2011-12 season just yet.

Shane Doan

Like Iginla with the Flames, Shane Doan has spent his entire career with the Phoenix Coyotes, dating back to their days as the original Winnipeg Jets.

And, like Iginla, Doan has seen his name bandied about in trade rumors, even though he remains loyal to the franchise that selected him in the 1995 NHL draft, the very same year Iginla came out.

Ironically enough, the Coyotes are tied with the Flames in the Western Conference hierarchy and have taken a similar approach to handling their franchise stalwart—they aren't looking to move him.

Doan notched the first hat trick of his career earlier this month and will likely be called upon to help the 'Yotes make one more push toward relevance, before he becomes a free agent and the team faces the possibility of folding in the offseason.

Few would blame Teemu Selanne for wanting off the Anaheim Ducks, even if hockey fans would just as readily rip him for skipping out on the 2012 NHL All-Star Game.

In any case, Selanne has drawn interest from the new Winnipeg Jets and, according to the Calgary Sun, hasn't closed the door on the possibility of bringing things full circle. Selanne began his career in Winnipeg, well before the Jets left town for Phoenix, and likely wouldn't mind closing out his 20-season tenure in the NHL with a team that might actually make the playoffs.

Then again, while the Ducks sport the third-fewest points in the West, they have been playing well of late, racking up a record of 6-3-1 in their last 10 games under Bruce Boudreau. With half a season to go and a trio of young stars—Ryan Getzlaf, Corey Perry and Bobby Ryan—by his side, Selanne, who can veto any trade, might just be willing to stick around a Ducks team that would be happy to have him.
