Gilbert Arenas and the Biggest NBA Free-Agent Gambles That Will Pay Off
Thanks to the NBA lockout, this past offseason came fast and furious. Faced with uncertainty, some guys had to sign in other places and some guys weren't in proper shape to contribute to a team right away.
There are several factors why there are still talented players on the market. The amnesty clause played a bit of a role.
No matter the reason, there are several former stars still on the free-agent market.
These are gambles for certain teams, but at the end of the day, they may just pay off.
Rasheed Wallace
1 of 4Rasheed Wallace is looking to attempt a comeback and while he may be a risk, he can still help a contending team.
If he's in shape and willing to play a limited role, Wallace can extend the defense and with his muscular frame can still defend in the post.
Kenyon Martin
2 of 4Kenyon Martin is not permitted to sign with an NBA team until March, but he also could help a contender.
Many teams don't have deep frontcourts and Martin should be able to help a team on the glass and on the defensive end of the floor.
Gilbert Arenas
3 of 4The one thing all of these guys so far have in common is that they have a ton of baggage.
Obviously Gilbert Arenas is no different, but if a team needs backcourt scoring, he could be a viable option.
He's got something to prove and if he's motivated, Arenas could become a gamble that pays off in a big way.
J.R. Smith
4 of 4J.R. Smith's experience for his Chinese team has been interesting to say the least.
He's faked a knee injury to try and get out of his contract and even had to go into the stands to break up a fight involving his sister and another fan.
He may be a little insane but what he can do when he's eligible to sign with an NBA team is provide some scoring punch.
