NBA Trade Rumors: Why the Nets Must Make a Move for OJ Mayo

Kelly ScalettaJan 13, 2012

The New Jersey Nets are looking to add OJ Mayo through a trade, according to a tweet from Yahoo!'s Adrian Wojnarowski:

"

Memphis and New Jersey have been engaged in trade talks centered on guard O.J. Mayo, but a deal appears unlikely, league sources tell Y!

"

Reportedly, the Nets are offering Anthony Morrow and a pick in exchange for Mayo, but discussions "have lost traction."

Whether this is to get another star to play alongside Deron Williams or whether it's to get a player that the Nets could use in a future Dwight Howard trade, the Nets need to push a little harder and get that traction back.

It's not like OJ Mayo has exceeded expectations or, for that matter, even met them, but that doesn't matter. It's something, and right now, the Nets need something.

Deron Williams is obviously frustrated. By his own admission, he shows it on the court. The team is horrible. If you give an assassin an arsenal of Twizzlers and gummy bears, he's not going to be deadly. The weapons matter, and Williams has none to speak of to work with. As a result, the Nets are horrible.

If they have any chance of keeping him, they have to give him, at minimum, a modicum of hope that it's worth the trouble of sticking around.

Really, what's to lose in a Mayo trade? Certainly not nearly as much as losing Williams if they don't.
