BCS Championship: Why It Should Be a Split National Title
Less than 24 hours after Alabama's win over LSU in the BCS Championship game, the AP voters quickly quieted the talk of a split national title.
The Crimson Tide received 55 first-place votes with Oklahoma State only getting four and LSU receiving one.
The Associated Press got it wrong with not voting LSU to a split national title with Alabama.
Yes, I am aware that Alabama shut LSU down in the BCS Championship, 21-0. But since we used the body of work argument for the Crimson Tide to get in the game in the first place, let's examine LSU's body of work to sort out this argument.
Overall, LSU defeated eight ranked opponents over the course of the 2011 season, including three teams that finished in the Top Five of the final AP poll.
LSU also beat the eventual Rose Bowl, Orange Bowl, Cotton Bowl and BCS Championship Game winners by an average of 16.5 points during their four meetings of the season.
I will admit that Alabama dominated LSU in all aspects of the game this past Monday. Offense, defense and special teams belonged to the Crimson Tide this time around.
However, the Alabama win doesn't prove anything when compared to LSU. Sure, the Crimson Tide dominated the statistical categories over the two games, but are you going to boil the argument down to who had the better win?
LSU beat Alabama and then they got revenge on the Tigers and evened the score for the season. All we learned through Monday's BCS Championship game is that these two teams can't score field goals on each other.
To completely discredit LSU's argument of being the No. 1 team after dominating one the toughest schedules in recent memory is foolish.
For starters, LSU had to earn their way into the BCS Championship game by beating Georgia in the SEC Championship, while second-ranked Alabama sat idle and was basically given a spot into the game. LSU was seemingly punished for beating Alabama, when it really should be the other way around.
Don't get me wrong, Alabama played an outstanding football game on Monday and proved they should be called national champion. But they need to be joined by the LSU Tigers at the top of the college football world.
