NFL Rumors: Who the Oakland Raiders Should Be Targeting as Next Head Coach

Oakland's new general manager, Reggie McKenzie, the former director of player operations in Green Bay, wasted no time putting his stamp on the team, firing head coach Hue Jackson today.

But don't waste your time speculating that the Raiders might try to bring in the usual suspects like Jeff Fisher or Jon Gruden (like that would ever happen). According to those who tend to know these things, McKenzie is likely to stick with someone he knows: Packers assistant head coach Winston Moss.

And, he might bring secondary coach Darren Perry along as his defensive coordinator.

It might not be sexy, Raiders fans, but pulling from a coaching tree like Green Bay's is a smart move. McKenzie—a man who helped build the Packers Super Bowl-winning roster—is highly respected around the league, and allowing him to surround himself with coaches he knows and trusts bodes well for the organization, top to bottom.

Winston Moss played for the Raiders and was rumored for various positions around the league last year. He's been an assistant head coach on a team that won the Super Bowl, so he's coached in every situation and should hit the ground running despite not being a head coach in the NFL previously.

For a Raiders team on the cusp of being a playoff team, some new blood—and new blood that is coming from a winning organization, at that—might be just what the doctor ordered.

It's a new era in Oakland. And early indications are that it should be the start of a good era in Oakland.
