Cam Skattebo's Workload, J.J. McCarthy's Future as QB1 Updated in New Giants Rumors

Joseph ZuckerOct 25, 2026

Expect to see plenty of running back Cam Skattebo and quarterback J.J. McCarthy in the New York Giants offense.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Sunday that Skattebo is poised to be the team's "lead" back in Week 7 against the Houston Texans, though it's unclear if he'll start the game.

The second-year player logged just six snaps and went without a carry in New York's 34-27 loss to the New Orleans Saints.

The promotion of McCarthy, meanwhile, continues the Giants' revolving door at quarterback.

Rapoport reported the 2024 first-round pick is at least "expected to remain the Giants' QB1 beyond their Week 8 bye."

Skattebo has had a tough season so far. Through his first five starts, he ran for 294 yards and one touchdown while averaging 3.6 yards per carry. He also fumbled four times, one of which nearly resulted in a loss to the Washington Commanders in Week 5.

"I got taught a lesson," Skattebo told reporters after being marginalized in the Saints game. "I don't know if that's from them or from myself, but I had to take a step back and figure out why I was doing the things that I was doing and what exactly was happening."

With the Giants releasing Najee Harris, it would be an even more damning indictment if Skattebo's usage didn't increase moving forward.

In the case of McCarthy, the Giants don't have much to lose from giving him an extended look.

New York went 2-1-1 in Jameis Winston's four starts, but his individual production was subpar. He threw for 846 yards, seven touchdowns and four interceptions with an 84.3 passer rating. His 39.9 QBR also ranks 28th among qualified QBs.

McCarthy wasn't efficient after coming on in relief of Winston against the Saints, finishing 11-of-21. He did at least have 243 passing yards, opening up the aerial attack in a way that wasn't happening with Winston at the helm.

Maybe that limited sample was a mirage, but Harbaugh clearly saw something in the former Michigan standout that led him to believe McCarthy can be a starting option. Now, we'll see whether that's the case.
