Should Gunner Kiel Rethink His Commitment to LSU After BCS Embarrassment?
Gunner Kiel, the No. 1 quarterback prospect in the class of 2012, has committed to LSU. But after Monday night's debacle in the 2012 BCS Championship game against Alabama, should Kiel think about going somewhere else for college?
No, of course he shouldn't.
In fact, if LSU had Kiel in that game, they might have won.
LSU's biggest problem against the Crimson Tide was their absolute lack of competent quarterback play. Jordan Jefferson constantly looked lost and made the wrong decisions on nearly every play. He was terrible, and his play cost his team the game.
Personally, I would have switched to Jarrett Lee about halfway through the third quarter at the latest, but I'm not Les Miles. Miles couldn't figure out what plays to call that Jefferson could actually execute and didn't seem to think Lee would give them a better shot at winning.
Kiel, meanwhile, is probably already a better quarterback than both Jefferson and Lee, so having him last night might have allowed LSU to win. Granted, Alabama's defense is still amazing, so how many points Kiel could have scored for the Tigers is debatable, but he would have at least gotten LSU across midfield before late in the fourth quarter.
So, with several key players coming back on both offense and defense for the Tigers, Kiel should feel more secure than ever in his decision to go to LSU. He should know he can win the starting quarterback job pretty easily in 2012. And he knows he'll have some solid running backs and one of the best defenses in the country.
LSU is a quarterback away from getting back to the national championship, and Kiel is that quarterback. If he can even be serviceable as a quarterback in 2012, the Tigers have a legitimate shot at going undefeated again, winning another SEC Championship and getting another chance to play for a college football title.
Kiel should stay strong in his commitment to LSU, a team that desperately needs him and can compete for a national championship with him.
