Breaking Down Sneak Peak of New Era's Sick Marvel NBA Lids

Gabe ZaldivarJan 9, 2012

Nerd peculiarities meet hoop-head appeal with the New Era Marvel Comics hats for the Knicks and Celtics and we have you covered on their swagger appeal.

It's not enough to look good. You have to make a bold statement as well. What better way to tell people your team loyalties while also proclaiming that you might be interested in discussing the finer points of the Marvel Universe than one of the following hats?

New Era is back with a couple more Marvel hats emblazoned with an NBA team alongside a Marvel character that exudes the passion and zeal of that particular team, sort of. Here we break down what hits and what misses for the new hats for the Boston Celtics and New York Knicks.

These pictures come from the Twitter feed of CNBC's Darren Rovell. You can see the Celtics one here and Knicks one here. It seems both of these will be available in the Spring.

New York Knicks

The Knicks get the Spider-Man treatment. Let's discuss.

Superhero Connection: I love Spider-Man for New York City. The tall buildings are the perfect for web-slinging all over to save fans from watching a team that only sometimes plays defense.

Grade: A

Swagger: Here's the thing. I want my superhero hat with but a touch of nerd. The Knicks get a hat that can be worn backwards with a black backing adorning half the hat. That way you don't hit people over the head with your urge to get back home and read the latest issue of I Live with my Parents

Grade: B+

Overall Dome Grade: This is a winner. I am not even a Knicks fan and I would rock this thing on the way to the next ComicCon or the arena to see my favorite club hoop it up. Epic.

Grade: A-

Boston Celtics

The Celtics get just about every superhero that would fit on a hat.

Superhero Connection: Well, the Celtics are the team that started the "Big Three" rage a few years back. I would be hard-pressed to call the aging Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett superheroes at this point, though. I will let them slide because of the obvious use of Hulk on the green hat.

Grade: B

Swagger: I reached to turn down my computer when I saw this hat. That's how loud this thing is. Wouldn't a picture of the Hulk smashing the Lakers have sufficed? This looks like Stan Lee's head exploded onto a fabric and New Era just used it as the image.

Grade: C

Overall Dome Grade: I will bump the Celtics overall grade up a notch because they are one of the most legendary franchises in sports. So we can forgive the overzealous use of heroes.

Grade: B-

That does it for the two new hats hitting stores in the spring. Some of you may want to peel yourselves away from the comic books and get to a mall. Don't worry, I'm sure you have a few months to prepare for the voyage.
