Summer Olympics 2012: Predicting the 2012 USA Basketball Team

Matt ShetlerJun 7, 2018

The Olympics are just around the corner, which means the USA Men's Basketball Team will be looking to bring home the gold once again.

But which 12 current NBA stars will make up coach Mike Krzyzewski's roster for the London Games?

These type of cuts are never easy, especially when dealing with players of this caliber.

While it seems that any 12 could bring home the gold, the USA has proven before that it needs the right 12 players.

So here's a look at what the USA roster could look like for the London Games.

Point Guard: Chris Paul

1 of 12

Paul is a lock and will fill Team USA's need for a playmaker, a role Jason Kidd had filled in the past.

Shooting Guard: Kobe Bryant

2 of 12

If he's healthy enough at the end of the NBA season, he's a lock.

Small Forward: LeBron James

3 of 12

No real explanation needed for including James on the roster.

Power Forward: Chris Bosh

4 of 12

Bosh is nice to have because he can play the 4 or the 5 and his jump shot helps keep opposing big men honest.

Center: Dwight Howard

5 of 12

Howard controls the paint and cleans up mistakes. He's too valuable not to have on the team.

Sixth Man: Kevin Durant

6 of 12

The two-time scoring champion is a lock and his jumper will be very effective against zone defense.

Bench: Dwyane Wade

7 of 12

He's banged up at the moment and after a long playoff run, his body may need to heal up, but as long as Wade is healthy, he will be back for another Olympics.

Bench: Deron Williams

8 of 12

Williams could face some competition to return for a shot at another gold medal.

They could go with Derrick Rose or give the veteran Chauncey Billups a shot.

Williams is better at running a more structured offense and his shooting is valuable, so he gets the nod.

Bench: Russell Westbrook

9 of 12

They typically could use a three-point threat here, which makes Stephen Curry a good option, but you never know about his health situation.

Eric Gordon, Billups or Rose could get this spot.

Rose found himself on the bench during fourth quarters during the 2010 FIBA World Championships in Turkey. Teams dared him to shoot the jumper and he didn't do so with success.

Gordon could be an attractive guy to take, but Coach K could elect to go for another playmaker with Westbrook.

Bench: Carmelo Anthony

10 of 12

How would you like to have to attempt to guard just the top three forwards on this team?

Anthony played both forward spots for the 2008 team and his versatility is helpful in matchup situations.

Bench: Andre Iguodala

11 of 12

Iguodala fills the need of defensive stopper.

They loved the way he embraced the role and shut down everyone in the process. That earned him a likely spot on the 2012 team.

Bench: Kevin Love

12 of 12

The 2010 team really didn't have a center and it proved to be a problem at times.

Having Love back up Howard makes sense from a rebounding perspective. You don't lose much there at all when you go to your bench.
