76ers' Andre Drummond Says Intentionally Missing Shots to Pad Rebounds Was a Joke

Zach BacharOct 20, 2024

Philadelphia 76ers center Andre Drummond clarified his viral comments regarding his rebounding approach, explaining that he was joking in a Saturday post on X.

During a Wednesday appearance on the Run Your Race podcast, Drummond was asked if he ever intentionally missed shots earlier in his career in order to grab a rebound (h/t ClutchPoints' David Yapkowitz).

"Yeah," the veteran center responded.

While Drummond has primarily operated as a reserve center in recent years, he was dominant on the boards to open his career and made two All-Star appearances as a member of the Detroit Pistons.

From his 2015-16 season through his 2019-20 campaign, he averaged 4.8 offensive rebounds and 15.0 total rebounds per game.

Drummond ranks No. 33 on the NBA's all-time rebounding leaderboard and has the second-most among active players, only trailing Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James.

While the 31-year-old's role has diminished, he's still proven that he can clean the glass at an exceptional rate. In 79 appearances with the Chicago Bulls last season, Drummond averaged 18.9 rebounds per 36 minutes.

He then signed a two-year, $10 million contract with the 76ers in free agency. He's expected to serve as depth behind Joel Embiid during the 2024-25 season and could receive extended playing time, as Embiid is unlikely to play in back-to-backs.
