Video: Yankees' Aaron Judge Calls Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani 'Best Player' in MLB

Timothy RappJun 10, 2024

Aaron Judge is having an MVP-caliber season and was the American League Player of the Month in May.

But even he's in awe of Shohei Ohtani.

"What an impressive athlete," he said Monday. "He hit the ball in the park, all over. When he's right he's pitching, doing his thing. He can also tag up from third on a short throw. He's the best player out there."

Judge isn't alone.

In The Athletic's MLB Player Poll, released on Monday, 46 percent of players who participated said that Ohtani was the best player in the sport, followed by Ronald Acuña Jr. (26.5 percent), Mookie Betts and Judge (each eight percent).

"There's no comparison," one player said. "Everybody has a comp, he's got no comp."

"Shohei Ruth or Babe Ohtani—no question," another added.

While the 29-year-old Ohtani isn't pitching this season after having an offseason procedure on his elbow, but he's 38-19 in his career with a 3.01 ERA and 1.08 WHIP across 86 starts.

He'd be a very good pitcher if that was his only gig, but he's also one of the most dangerous sluggers in the sport. This season the two-time AL MVP and three-time All-Star is hitting .310 with 15 homers, 41 RBI, 47 runs and a .947 OPS. Even without making an appearance on the mound, he'll still be in the NL MVP conversation.

Judge, 32, is inarguably the frontrunner for the AL MVP, hitting .305 with 24 homers, 59 RBI, 51 runs and a ridiculous 1.139 OPS. He probably deserved a bit more than eight percent of the vote in The Athletic's MLB Player Poll, but he's more than happy giving other players around the sport their flowers.

After Juan Soto missed New York's series with Ohtani's Dodgers over the weekend, Judge noted that Soto has "been carrying this team all year."

Again, Judge—and one of the best rotations in baseball, even without Gerrit Cole—has played a huge role as well. But Judge isn't above spreading around the love.
