Mavericks' Kyrie Irving 'Never' Doubted That He Would Reach NBA Finals Again

Kyrie Irving's confidence in his ability to play in the NBA Finals again never wavered.

The Dallas Mavericks star revealed that he "never" had doubts about a return to the finals in an interview with ESPN's Malika Andrews.

"I work too hard at my craft," Irving explained. "I know that I've learned the formulas of what it takes to get here. I feel like I'm bred for this."

The 32-year-old last appeared on the biggest stage as a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2017. Irving was a crucial member of the Cavaliers team that won a championship in 2016, hitting one of the most iconic shots in NBA history.

The eight-time All-Star was also on Cleveland's roster during the team's trip to the finals in 2018, although he didn't play in the eventual series sweep against the Golden State Warriors due to a knee injury.

Now, Irving has a chance to compete for a title once again as a member of the Dallas Mavericks. After he was acquired by the team in a Feb. 2023 trade with the Brooklyn Nets, he's blossomed as an elite secondary option alongside superstar Luka Dončić.

Following an impressive regular season, Irving has carried his carried his efficient play into the postseason. In 17 playoff games, he's averaging 22.8 points and 5.2 assists per game on 48.5/42.1/82.8 shooting splits.

He's also stepped up his defensive performances as well, owning the second-best net rating on Dallas' roster in the postseason (via NBA.com).

Irving will attempt to help the Mavericks steal Game 1 on the road against his former team, the Boston Celtics. Tip-off is on Thursday at 8:30 p.m. ET.
