LSU vs Alabama Rematch: Why the AP Is Rooting for Alabama to Stick It to the BCS

Randy ChambersJun 5, 2018

When it was announced that Alabama and LSU would be playing in the national championship, majority of college football fans cringed. Unless you're a fan of one of those teams or a fan of the SEC in general of course.

College football fans are sick of the SEC and want to see another team finally knock them off. Having two SEC teams play for the national championship only guarantees that the conference will win their sixth straight championship, regardless of who ends up winning the game.

Apparently the fans aren't the only ones, as the AP is rooting for Alabama to beat LSU. They don't just want the Crimson Tide to win the game, they want them to destroy the Tigers. A score like the West Virginia-Clemson game would do just fine for the AP.

Why is the AP doing this?

Because they're looking for any way possible to have a split national championship. If LSU wins, that's the easy way out, the Tigers are crowned champions this season and everybody goes home happy. (Except Alabama fans of course)

But if the Crimson Tide win, it would make many think twice about who the champion is. Sure, Alabama would become the BCS champion, but what about the AP? Can we really just crown a team champion after they lost to LSU earlier in the year? What would make Alabama's victory over LSU more important than the Tigers' victory over Alabama?

If Alabama ends up destroying LSU, that wouldn't do much for the Crimson Tide. Many voters would consider still voting for the Tigers because of their ridiculous resume this season. Or some would consider bringing Oklahoma State back into the conversation.

The Cowboys had an impressive bowl victory over Stanford and could get some love if the AP gets what they want.

The AP wants a split title for the first time since 2003. They want to mess up the BCS and make everything more complicated than it already is.

The AP wants a playoff, just like many of you.
