NFL Front Office Shakeup: Every Coach, GM Fired and Their Potential Replacements

Chris TrapassoJun 7, 2018

Surprised which NFL head coaches and general managers got the boot? Wondering who the heir apparents will be?

It is all right here.

The NFL offseason usually begins with a handful of head coach and GM searches.

This year is no different.

COACHES

Jack Del Rio, Jacksonville Jaguars

Del Rio was the fired all the way back in November, and defensive coordinator Mel Tucker took over on an interim basis to end the season. Del Rio went 68-71 with two playoff appearances and one playoff victory during his tenure in Jacksonville.

Possible Replacements

Mike Mularkey, Jay Gruden, Mel Tucker, Brian Schottenheimer

Mularkey seems like a fantastic option, having NFL head coaching experience under his belt. He also constructed a great system in Atlanta for young QB Matt Ryan. Jay Gruden also did a fantastic job with Andy Dalton this season in Cincinnati.

Tucker has a shot to hang on to his current role, but chances are, Jacksonville will look for an external hire. Schottenheimer visited with the team earlier this week.

Tony Sparano, Miami Dolphins

After leading Miami to an 11-5 campaign in his first season, Sparano ended his tenure with a 29-32 record with the club. Assistant head coach Todd Bowles took over the team in December.

Possible Replacements

Jeff Fisher, Joe Philbin, Todd Bowles, Jon Gruden

There's a variety of guys that could be lured to Miami by Stephen Ross' checkbook. The guy won't be outbid for the coach he wants. Miami was first in line to interview former Tennessee Titans coach Jeff Fisher, who seems like the front-runner for the job at this stage.

Philbin is the Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator, but his name has been tied with the Kansas City Chiefs, too.

Bowles, like Tucker, has a chance to retain his role, but it's unlikely.

Jon Gruden has made numerous claims that he wants to stay in the Monday Night Football booth, but a big payday could change his mind.

Todd Haley, Kansas City Chiefs

The fiery Haley was the hottest coaching commodity after the Arizona Cardinals' magical run to the Super Bowl in 2009. During his time with the Chiefs, he accumulated a 19-27 record with one division crown and playoff berth. After he was fired on Dec. 12, Romeo Crennel took the reigns.

Possible Replacements

Romeo Crennel, Josh McDaniels, Joe Philbin

McDaniels has a shot to reunite with Scott Pioli in KC, but it seems as though they want to give Crennel as second go-around as a head coach. They did interview Philbin earlier this week, however. As a team with a sound defense, Crennel, who has the respect of the players, looks to be the ideal choice at this juncture.

Raheem Morris, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

After leading his club to a 10-6 season, the young Raheem Morris was canned by the Buccaneers after arguably the most disappointing year of any NFL team in 2011. The entire coaching staff was also let go.

Possible Replacements

Mike Mularkey, Rob Chudzinski, Mike Sherman, Jerry Gray

There are other, higher-profile names, but these are the most viable candidates right now. Mularkey will be a highly sought after guy because of his success in Atlanta, and the NFL is raving about the job Chudzinski did with Cam Newton this season.

Mike Sherman and Jerry Gray are the only two guys that have interviewed for the job thus far. Sherman, having been fired from Texas A&M, would like to get back into the pro game.

Steve Spagnuolo, St. Louis Rams

Spagnuolo was fired on January 2nd after compiling a 10-38 record in three season as the Rams head coach. The team nearly made the postseason in 2010, but dramatically regressed in 2011, going 2-14.

Possible Replacements

Jeff Fisher, Jay Gruden

There haven't been rumblings about anyone other than Jeff Fisher to date. He's interviewing with the team and is the guy St. Louis desperately wants.

Although the atmosphere and money in Miami may be more enticing, Fisher would be taking over a team already with a franchise quarterback, the No. 2 overall pick in April's draft that plays in the NFC West. Jay Gruden is an offensive mind that could be brought in to shorten the learning curve for Sam Bradford.

GENERAL MANAGERS

Billy Devaney, St. Louis Rams

The Rams are cleaning house, and early reports indicate that they'd love to pair Fisher with a young and enthusiastic general manager.

Possible Replacements

Les Snead, Lake Dawson

While the Rams have been upfront with the courting of Fisher, they have yet to make it obvious as to which GM they want.

Les Snead is the Falcons Director of Player Personnel and is probably the hottest first-time GM candidate in the NFL.

Lake Dawson completed his first year as the Tennessee Titans Vice President of Football Operations. He previously worked with Fisher.

Jerry Angelo, Chicago Bears

Angelo was let go after the Bears' dismal end to the year, while Love Smith was retained. Under Angelo's watch, the Bears advanced to a Super Bowl and won the division last season.

Possible Replacements

Tim Ruskell, Reggie McKenzie, Les Snead

Obviously, these aren't the only available candidates, but the most likely ones for the Bears. Ruskell was brought on Angelo's staff in 2010 and was the "next in line" to take over the position. However, if the hire was to be internal, wouldn't it have already happened?

Les Snead is another candidate, a guy looking for his first GM gig in the NFL. Reggie McKenzie, the Green Bay Packers Head of Football Operations, is close friends with Lovie Smith. Don't count him out, either.

UPDATE: Reports have surfaced that Reggie McKenzie has taken a position with the Oakland Raiders.

Chris Polian, Indianapolis Colts

In one of the more stunning developments so far in 2012, the Colts fired both Chris Polian and his iconic father, Bill Polian on Monday.

Their success with the Colts was unmatched, but after a 2-14 season, owner Jim Irsay decided to go in a different direction.

Possible Replacements

Les Snead, Reggie McKenzie, David Gettleman

Irsay has yet to identify any potential general manager candidates and said the search could take several weeks. These three names have consistently popped up for the other vacancies across the league and there's a great chance they'll be given a long look from the Colts, too.
