Upset Watch: Baylor over Virginia Tech
2 of 3
Baylor is among the hottest teams in the nation following a winning streak at the end of the regular season that saw them straight-up dominate Texas Tech, Cincinnati, and Oklahoma.
Not only did they win those games, they did so convincingly, with double-digit victories that announced them as a legitimate contender in the tournament.
They could continue that streak Sunday with a win over Virginia Tech.
The Bears are not a star-studded team. They dish the ball amongst each other, setting one another up to score and doing so happily. There is no ego, which ultimately means the best player with the best opportunity to score will usually be put in a position to do so.
The team does turn the ball over, but they are such a well-oiled machine offensively that they are capable of making up for it.
Against a strong Virginia Tech team, it will not be easy. The Aggies are an offensive force that relies heavily on assists. They can capitalize on the turnovers that Baylor may give up and run away with the game.
Look for the Bears to be as good as ever Sunday, with a trip to the Sweet 16 on the line, and stun Virginia Tech to advance.
Lock: Kansas State over Colorado
3 of 3
Colorado's defense fell apart late in the season as the team struggled down the stretch in the regular season, losing five of its last six games and giving up 1.01 points per scoring attempt to opponents.
They were not good by any stretch of the imagination and, while they held off Drake in the tournament opener, they face a better Kansas State team in round two.
The Wildcats' Ayoka Lee is a defensive machine, with over 300 blocks and 100 steals in her career, and is a match-up nightmare for most teams. Add to that that she can score alongside the best, with nearly 20 points per game, and you have a difference-maker who can lead her team past the Buffaloes on Sunday.
Colorado could make things interesting, thanks to how careful they are with the ball and the few turnovers they have given up, but the questions on the defensive side of the ball, and their seeming inability to halt the downward spiral late in the irregular season make them a team whose quest for a NCAA title will be in jeopardy.
Especially as the competition gets tougher.
