NFL Rumors: Andy Reid, Chiefs to Negotiate New Contract to Become Highest-Paid HC

Tyler ConwayFeb 26, 2024

The Kansas City Chiefs are reportedly expected to offer head coach Andy Reid a contract extension that will make him the NFL's highest-paid coach.

Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reported Reid and the Chiefs are expected to begin negotiations in the "coming weeks" regarding a new deal. General manager Brett Veach is also expected to receive a new contract after helping shepherd Kansas City to back-to-back Super Bowls.

Pelissero reported around a "half-dozen" NFL coaches currently make $15 million or more per season, and Reid's new deal will top all of those numbers. NFL coaching salaries are not typically made publicly available, but Bill Belichick was believed to be making around $25 million for the New England Patriots before his exit.

While Belichick was being paid for his dual roles as head coach and de facto general manager, Reid seems in line to make at least $20 million given the Chiefs' recent run of success. Kansas City has won three of the last five Super Bowls and appeared in four of the past five, creating a dynasty that is not showing signs of slowing down.

Patrick Mahomes certainly deserves his fair share of credit for the success, but Reid's willingness to adapt to personnel changes and adjust his scheme to his talent is remarkable. Over the last five years, the Chiefs have gone from dominating teams via a series of downfield passes to chunking their way down the field on short and intermediate routes.

Mahomes averaged 17.3 air yards per passing touchdown in 2019 and just 3.9 average air yards per touchdown in 2023, per NFL analyst Warren Sharpe. The fact that the Chiefs have maintained consistent success despite that shift in the scheme is a testament to Mahomes and Reid.

Expect the Chiefs to back up a truckload of money to keep Reid scheming the offense for years to come.
