2012 NFL Draft Order: Washington Redskins and Teams That Need a QB
Do you doubt that a QB is the most important position on the field? If so, just take a look at the teams selecting in the top five picks of the 2012 NFL Draft. All of them fall under one of three scenarios:
- No franchise QB on the roster
- Franchise QB injured for much or all of the season
- Franchise QB is too young or a bust
In short, an unsettled QB situation is the key to futility in the NFL. Here are the five teams, with the worst records, categorized by their QB situation and their best plan of attack for the June draft and or next season.
Indianapolis Colts
Franchise QB Injured
The Colts have a complicated situation. Peyton Manning has a career threatening neck injury, he's long in the tooth and the team just happens to have the top pick in a draft that features the best QB prospect (Andrew Luck) since Peyton himself came from Tennessee.
What they should do—Trade down, grab Robert Griffin III and add picks. This team has a ton of holes, and while the QB spot is the most important RG3 is an amazing talent in his own right and the Colts would be in the position to stockpile talent.
What they will do—Draft Luck. The Colts will not be able to resist bringing him in to learn from Manning, ideally, or to replace him if the future Hall of Famer is done.
St. Louis Rams
Franchise QB injured much of the season
The Rams still like Sam Bradford, but his inability to stay healthy may be a cause for concern. He entered the NFL with durability questions, but after playing in all 16 games as a rookie that seemed to be dispelled. Bradford missed six games this year and Kellen Clemens looked good as his backup towards the end of the season until he was injured in the season finale.
What they should do—Give Bradford at least one more year. He doesn't have a prime time receiver and the offensive line is shaky at best in pass protection. Drafting Justin Blackmon is an instant upgrade.
What they will do—Draft Justin Blackmon or Matt Kalil at LT
Minnesota Vikings
Franchise QB is too young
The Vikings selected Christian Ponder in the first round in 2011. He started off fast but seemed to regress as the season went on. He, like Bradford, has no primary threat at receiver. With concerns about the health of Adrian Peterson, the Vikings desperately need to upgrade the passing weapons. Ponder deserves another look at QB
What they should do—Draft Blackmon, if the Rams pass. If he's unavailable they should trade down to add picks and select Alshon Jeffery in the middle of the first round.
What they will do—Draft either Blackmon or Morris Claiborne. The secondary is the Vikings other big area of need.
Cleveland Browns
Franchise QB is too young and may be a bust
I am not impressed with Colt McCoy. I know he doesn't have great receivers but his decision making is not equal to his intangibles and he has limited arm strength. The Browns are in position to improve at this position through the draft.
What they should do—Take Robert Griffin III. He'll likely be there as the Colts will probably take Andrew Luck. He gives the Browns a great talent and a mega attraction on offense. Both are things they haven't had in recent memory.
What they will do—Draft Trent Richardson. As dominant as Richardson has been in college I am not a proponent of drafting a RB this high for a team with so many holes. He just doesn't stand to be a big enough difference maker from that position to warrant using the fourth pick on.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Franchise QB may be a bust
As high as people were on Josh Freeman last year, his stock has fallen almost as fast as the Bucs' team has. With Raheem Morris fired it would stand to reason that the new regime may want a different signal caller.
This could be a spot for RG3, or even Landry Jones depending on the thought process of the new coaches.
What they should do—This team needs a leader on defense from the safety or middle linebacker position. There isn't one that isn't a reach at No. 5. They should trade down for Luke Kiechly of Boston College. He is the top rated MLB prospect in the draft. The team also needs multiple picks. It is a win-win situation.
What they will do—Draft Morris Claiborne if he's available. If not, I believe they will look to trade down.
