NBA Teams Destined to Land in the Draft Lottery

Matt ShetlerJun 7, 2018

We know a lot about the NBA season already.

For instance, we already know that the Miami Heat and Oklahoma City Thunder will be very good basketball teams.

We also know that not all teams will be good and in fact certain teams will be pretty bad.

For those selective few, it's straight to next season's lottery.

Here's a look at the 14 teams headed straight for the NBA Draft Lottery.

On a side note, this is not a prediction of standings, just which teams will find themselves hoping the ping-pong balls bounce their way.

Toronto Raptors

1 of 14

This will be the fourth straight season that Toronto will fail to make the playoffs. While the Raptors may be an improved team, they are still a few pieces away from contending for anything.

New Jersey Nets

2 of 14

The Nets haven't made the playoffs since 2007, and the injury to Brook Lopez likely helps extend that streak. It's also very unlikely that they could make a play to acquire Dwight Howard in time to make a run at the playoffs this season.

Milwaukee Bucks

3 of 14

The Bucks are a team with a chance to sneak into the playoffs this season, but the Eastern Conference could be very tough to crack.

Milwaukee could find themselves slightly on the outside looking in.

Cleveland Cavaliers

4 of 14

No chance at the postseason this year for Cleveland, but the good news is that the Cavs will be in position to add another key piece to a team that already features last season's No. 1 overall pick Kyrie Irving.

Detroit Pistons

5 of 14

Detroit hasn't made an appearance in the playoffs since 2009, and that's something that will likely continue into next season.

Charlotte Bobcats

6 of 14

It's going to be a long season in Charlotte, who will likely miss the playoffs for the second consecutive season. On the bright side, they added what looks to be a solid part of the future in Kemba Walker and should be in a good position to add another piece of the future for next season.

Washington Wizards

7 of 14

Former No. 1 overall pick John Wall is improving as an overall point guard, but the Wizards still have a ways to go before they are considered a realistic playoff threat.

Utah Jazz

8 of 14

Utah has some good young pieces and likely will be in the running for the No. 8 spot in the Western Conference but will likely just fall short at the end of the day.

Minnesota Timberwolves

9 of 14

Minnesota is likely the most improved team in the NBA. Don't be surprised if they find a way to sneak into the playoffs, but they are more than likely still a year away.

Golden State Warriors

10 of 14

Also possibly a year away are Mark Jackson's Warriors.

However, they have a chance to sneak in as the race for the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference could be a tight one with as many as four or five teams within striking distance at the end of the day.

Phoenix Suns

11 of 14

It looks like rebuilding time in Phoenix. The only question is will Steve Nash finish the season in a Suns uniform?

Sacramento Kings

12 of 14

The Kings haven't made the playoffs since 2006 and while they are getting better, they still have some ways to go.

It's back to the lottery where the Kings have had success the past three seasons by nabbing Tyreke Evans, DeMarcus Cousins and Jimmer Fredette.

New Orleans Hornets

13 of 14

They lost their two best players in Chris Paul and David West, and while the Hornets got a nice haul in exchange for Paul, it's rebuilding time in New Orleans.

Memphis Grizzlies

14 of 14

Judging by last season's playoff performance, the Grizzlies were a team heading in the right direction.

They still are but may take a step backwards before they make a big leap forwards.

They were the No. 8 seed a season ago and will narrowly miss out on that this year as the Houston Rockets will find a way to sneak into the playoffs.
