Picks Advice

There will be upsets. There are always upsets. But generally, there are best practices you can follow when deciding your bracket that more often than not tend to play out.

As a result, don't fret too much about identifying the correct No. 10 over No. 7 upset in the first round. What you want to ensure is that, if at all possible, your final four remains intact.

The NCAA is a wealth of information when it comes to which seeds historically perform the best, with its data stretching back to 1985, when the field expanded to 64 teams.

A few key takeaways? As Eric Vander Voort points out on NCAA.com, No. 1 seeds have reached the Final Four 60 times, the championship game 37 times and have won it all 24 times, boasting a far higher success rate over any other seeds.

In fact, when looking at the data in aggregate, it's astounding how much the results, with rare exceptions throughout the years, track with the seeds.

And yet, you can't just blindly promote the highest seeds all the way through your bracket. The last time a Final Four featured all the No. 1 seeds was in 2008 (Kansas, Memphis, North Carolina and UCLA).

NCAA.com's Andy Wittry recommends including two No. 1 seeds in your Final Four. Of this year's group (Alabama, Purdue, Kansas and Houston), Houston sits at No. 1 in KenPom rankings, while Alabama is at No. 3, and are both safe bets.

FiveThirtyEight gives the No. 1 seeds the following odds of winning it all: Alabama, 15 percent; Purdue, 5 percent; Houston, 25 percent and Kansas, 5 percent.

As for the other two picks to fill out your Final Four, No. 2 seeds have made that all-important round 32 times in 37 years, and No. 3 seeds have done so 17 times in that same span.

Of the No. 2 seeds, FiveThirtyEight likes Texas best, giving the Longhorns 8 percent of emerging as national champions. Texas just beat No. 1 Kansas for the second time in a week to win the Big 12 Championship and has been a popular Final Four pick in the early brackets.

You can have fun with Cinderella picks early on, and of course there are those special teams, like No. 8 Villanova in 1985 and No. 10 Syracuse in 2016, who go farther than anyone expected. But as you fill out your bracket, remember this: as Wittry points out, at least three teams in the Final Four have been seeded 1, 2 or 3 more than 70 percent of the time.
