NBA Rumors: T-Wolves Eye Naz Reid Contract Extension as Nets, More Teams Want Trade
The Minnesota Timberwolves could keep backup center Naz Reid through the Feb. 9 NBA trade deadline with the goal of extending his contract beyond this season, according to Matt Moore of the Action Network.
Moore reported that "several teams" have reached out to the Wolves about Reid. The Los Angeles Clippers, Denver Nuggets and Brooklyn Nets have all been linked to him within the past week.
Reid, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent in the offseason, is averaging 10.2 points and 4.8 rebounds in 17.6 minutes per game. His floor-spacing—he's averaging 0.9 made threes on 33.1 percent shooting—has provided a nice change of pace from Rudy Gobert at the 5.
Reid is also capable of attacking the basket on pick-and-rolls or off the dribble in ways Gobert can't.
If the Timberwolves could swing a trade involving the 23-year-old that netted them a proven contributor on a longer contract, then a deal might be worthwhile. But Minnesota is 27-25 and fifth in the tightly contested Western Conference. The team shouldn't be looking to jettison valuable rotation players without getting a commensurate return.
Because of that, you can see why the Wolves would prefer to keep Reid on the roster and keep the door open for an extension at some point down the road.
